1. A thermal relief valve adapted to sense the fluid temperature of a pump or the like and to open to discharge pump fluid when this fluid temperature becomes too high comprising:

  • a valve body defining a flow control chamber and having inlet means for delivering pump fluid to said flow control chamber, means providing a relief passage in said body for the flow of fluid from said flow control chamber to discharge, seal means at the upstream end of said relief passage, control means cooperable with said seal means to block flow therepast in a first control position and to permit flow therepast to said relief passage in a second control position, andtemperature responsive means for actuating said control means between said first and second control positions thereof, said temperature responsive means including a temperature sensing means mounted in said valve body to sense the pump fluid temperature, and an actuating member mounted for movement through an actuating movement in response to the sensing of a temperature increase by said temperature sensing means, said control means being operatively connected to said temperature responsive means to be movable between said first and second control positions thereof in response to movement of said actuating member through its actuating movement whereby said control means moves to said second control position in response to a temperature increase in the pump fluid to permit the discharge of pump fluid said flow control means including a valve member subjected to the pressure of the pump fluid and means for balancing the pressure across the upstream and downstream sides of said valve member so that said flow control means is substantially independent of the pressure of the fluid inside the pump.
