Torque coupling system for graphite impeller shafts
First Claim
1. A torque coupling system for molten metal pumps, mixers, or dispersers, comprising:
- a graphite shaft having an impeller at one end;
an electric motor connected to the other end of the graphite shaft, the electric motor adapted to rotate the graphite shaft and the impeller;
power supply means for supplying electrical current to the motor;
a current sensor electrically connected to the power supply means for sensing whenever current being drawn by the motor exceeds a predetermined limit; and
disabling means connected to the power supply means for disabling the power supply means, the disabling means being electrically connected to the current sensor and being activated upon receiving an electrical signal therefrom.

Abstract
A torque coupling system includes an impeller that is connected to one end of an impeller shaft without the use of threads. The connection is made by cement and dowels. A drive system for the shaft includes a hollow coupling into which the other end of the shaft can be fitted. The shaft includes longitudinally extending slots formed at its end. The coupling includes spaced, longitudinally extending keys adapted to be fitted into the slots formed in the shaft. The drive system also includes a torque limiter that is conected intermediate the coupling and a drive motor. If the drive motor is an electric motor, the motor can be provided with automatic shut-down circuitry that is activated in the event of a current/torque overload. Visual and aural alarms are provided to alert the user that a shut-down has occurred.

6. A torque coupling system for molten metal pumps, mixers, or dispersers, comprising:
-
a graphite shaft having an impeller at one end; a torque limiter connected to the other end of the graphite shaft; an electric motor connected to the torque limiter, the electric motor rotationally driving the graphite shaft and the impeller while a predetermined torque limit is not exceeded, and the motor and the shaft being rotatable relative to each other when the predetermined torque limit has been exceeded; a power supply means for providing electrical current to the motor; a current sensor electrically connected to the motor and to the power supply means, the current sensor sensing the electrical current being drawn by the motor; disabling means electrically connected to the current sensor and to the power supply means, the disabling means being activated upon receiving a signal from the current sensor that a predetermined current limit has been exceeded, the disabling means when activated disabling operation of the power supply means; an alarm electrically connected to the power supply means, the alarm being activated whenever the power supply means has been disabled by the disabling means; and reset means for restoring electrical current to the power supply means after the power supply means has been disabled by the disabling means.
