β-Lactam antibiotics have the formula (Ia) or are pharmaceutically acceptable salts or pharmaceutically acceptable in vivo hydrolysable esters thereof: ##STR1## in which the group CO2 R1 is carboxy or a carboxylate anion. The use of the compounds and processes for their preparation are disclosed.

A pharmaceutical composition useful for treating bacterial infections in humans and animals which comprises an antibacterially effective amount of a compound of the formula I ##STR30## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof in which CO2 R is carboxy or a carboxylate anion, or the group R is a readily removable carboxy protecting group, in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

A pharmaceutical composition useful for treating bacterial infections in humans and animals which comprises an antibacterially effective amount of a compound of the formula (Ia) ##STR31## a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof or a pharmaceutically acceptable in vivo hydrolyzable ester thereof wherein CO2 R1 is carboxy or a carboxylate anion, in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

A method of treating bacterial infections in humans and animals which comprises administering to a human or animal in need thereof an antibacterially effective amount of a compound of the formula (I) ##STR32## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof in which CO2 R is carboxy or a carboxylate anion, or the group R is a readily removable carboxy protecting group, in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

A method of treating bacterial infections in humans and animals which comprises administering to a human or animal in need thereof an antibacterially effective amount of a compound of the formula (Ia) ##STR33## a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof or a pharmaceutically acceptable in vivo hydrolyzable ester thereof wherein CO2 R1 is carboxy or a carboxylate anion, in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
