1. In a motor actuator of the type having a power output member which is driven in a manner specified by control signals applied to the motor actuator, and including a microprocessor having at least one input port and an output port, said microprocessor programmed to provide the control signals at the output port responsive to an external condition signal provided at one of said input ports, an improvement allowing manual control of the power output member position, comprising:
- (a) position source select signal generating means including a selector element for human manipulation, for providing a position source select signal having first and second states as the selector element is respectively in first and second positions; and
(b) adjustment signal generating means connected to an input port of the microprocessor and including an adjustment element to be placed in a plurality of positions by human manipulation, for providing an adjustment signal having a plurality of states as the adjustment element is respectively placed in its plurality of positions;
wherein the microprocessor includes member positioning means responsive to the position source select signal first state for providing a control signal at the output port dependent on the condition signal and for providing a control signal dependent on the adjustment signal responsive to the position source select signal second state,whereby the power output member is driven to a desired position by manipulation of the selector element to its second position and by manipulation of the adjustment element.

Abstract
The position of the power output member of a motor actuator which is normally controlled by a microprocessor in response to system-supplied condition signals may be set manually by providing a manually controlled selector signal to the microprocessor allowing manually controlled adjustment signals rather than the normal condition signals to form the parameters from which is derived the motor control signal. In the preferred embodiment, a first switch generates the selector signal and a second switch generates the adjustment signal. Such apparatus allows a repairer or installer to adjust a mechanical positioning system driven by the motor actuator while the positioning system is in a variety of precisely selected positions. This control system contains a feature allowing one to change position of the motor actuator'"'"'s power output member either continuously or incrementally by appropriately manipulating the switch which generates the adjustment signal.

11. A method for operating a motor actuator of the type having a power output member which is driven in a manner specified by control signals applied to the motor actuator, and including a microprocessor having at least one input port and an output port, said microprocessor programmed to provide the control signals at the output port responsive to an external condition signal provided at one of said input ports, and further including apparatus allowing manual control of the power output member position, comprising:
-
(a) position source select signal generating means including a selector element for human manipulation, for providing a position source select signal having first and second states as the selector element is respectively in first and second positions; and (b) adjustment signal generating means connected to an input port of the microprocessor and including an adjustment element to be placed in first, second, and third positions by human manipulation, for providing an adjustment signal having first, second, and third states as the adjustment element is respectively placed in its first, second, and third positions. wherein the microprocessor includes member positioning means responsive to the position source select signal first state for providing a control signal at the output port dependent on the condition signal and for providing a control signal specifying responsive to the position source select signal second state, first and second directions of movement of the power output member responsive respectively to the first and second states of the adjustment signal and freezing the power output member in its current position responsive to the adjustment signal'"'"'s third state, whereby the power output member may be driven to and frozen in a desired position by manipulation of the selector element to its second position and by manipulation of the adjustment element, wherein the method comprises a series of steps including manipulation of the apparatus allowing manual control of the power output member position to facilitate adjustment of the elements of a mechanical positioning system which is connected to and driven by the power output member, including the steps of manipulating the selector element to its second position and the adjustment element to its first, second, and third positions a plurality of times; and
after selected events of manipulating the adjustment element to its third position, adjusting the mechanical elements of the positioning system.
