1. A dosage form for administering a drug to a warm-blooded animal, wherein the dosage form comprises:

  • (a) a wall that surrounds;

    (b) a compartment;

    (c) a layer in the compartment comprising granules, the granules comprising a film comprising a polyvinylpyrrolidone polymer comprising a 10,000 to 500,000 molecular weight, that surrounds a drug possessing a solubility of 1 part of drug in less than 1 part of aqueous solvent to 1 part of drug in more than 10,000 parts of aqueous solvent, and a hydroxyalkylcellulose comprising a 10,000 to 1,000,000 molecular weight;

    (d) a layer in the compartment comprising a composition that imbibes fluid, consumes space and displaces the drug from the dosage form; and

    (e) at least one exit passageway in the wall that connects the exterior with the interior of the dosage form for delivering the drug to the warm-blooded animal over a prolonged period of time.
