1. A cruise control device for maintaining the speed of a motor vehicle close to a target vehicle speed by controlling an operation parameter for adjusting the output of an engine provided in the vehicle, comprising:

  • a vehicle speed sensor for detecting an actual vehicle speed of the vehicle;

    means for setting the target vehicle speed;

    calculating means for obtaining a vehicle speed deviation between the target vehicle speed and the actual vehicle speed;

    means for selecting a proportional control mode (P control mode) when the absolute value of the vehicle speed deviation is larger than a first value, and for controlling the operation parameter in accordance with the selected P control mode;

    means for selecting a proportional-plus-integral-plus derivation control mode (PID control mode) when the absolute value of the vehicle speed deviation is between the first value and a second value smaller than the first value, and for controlling the operation parameter in accordance with the selected PID control mode; and

    means for selecting a fuzzy control mode when the absolute value of the vehicle speed deviation is smaller than the second value, and for controlling the operation parameter in accordance with the selected fuzzy control mode.
