1. In a telecommunications system, an arrangement for providing a real-time switched broadband connection between broadband terminals, comprising:

  • at least one telephone exchange;

    a broadband interconnection device connected to said exchange by a communication means for transmitting data messages, and responsive to control commands in said data messages for selectively interconnecting broadband transmission links;

    means for transmitting to said exchange a connection request message from a first broadband terminal connected to said device via a first broadband link;

    said exchange responsive to a connection request from said first terminal defining a second terminal connected to said device via a second broadband link, for transmitting to said device via said communication means a data message including a control command defining said first and second links;

    said interconnection device responsive to said control command for establishing a path between said first and said second links.
