1. A detergent composition comprising from about 0.5 to 65% by weight of a surfactant and from about 1 to 80% by weight of a builder, wherein the builder is a polymer selected from the group consisting of:

  • a) a polymer derived from a polymer of furan and maleic anhydride, comprising a repeating unit of the structure;

    ##STR10## wherein R is H, --CH3, --CH2 CH3, or a combination thereof;

    X is H, or a salt forming cation, or a combination thereof; and

    m is at least 1;

    b) a polymer derived from a polymer of furan, maleic anhydride and at least one copolymerized comonomer, comprising a repeating unit of the structure;

    ##STR11## wherein A is a repeating unit derived from at least one copolymerized comonomer, selected from the group consisting of alkenyl alkyl ethers, alkyl acrylates, alkenyl carboxyalkyl ethers, vinyl esters of carboxylic acids, unsaturated carboxylic acids, unsaturated dicarboxylic acids and their anhydrides and esters, olefins and furan;

    R is H, --CH3, --CH2 CH3, or a combination thereof;

    X is H, or a salt forming cation, or a combination thereof;

    m is at least 1;

    n is greater than zero; and

    p is an integer from about 1 to 300; and

    c) combinations thereof.
