1. In a method for the cyclic regeneration of a water softening system comprising an exchange medium in an exchange medium tank which is in fluid communication with a brine storage tank, which comprises the steps of:

  • (a) filling said brine storage tank with a second refill of softened water in a quantity sufficient to create enough brine for said exchange medium, said brine storage tank already containing a first refill of softened water from a later step of the method;

    (b) first backwashing of said exchange medium with water flowing counter to the direction of water flowing therethrough during water softening;

    (c) passing brine from said brine storage tank through said exchange medium;

    (d) passing water through said exchange medium;

    (e) second backwashing of said exchange medium with water flowing counter to the direction of water flowing therethrough during water softening; and

    (f) refilling said brine tank with said first refill of softened water to create brine in a quantity insufficient to brine said exchange medium.
