    1, R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 are independently selected from the group consisting of H, SO3-, --SO3 H, --R7 SO3-, --R7 SO3 H, --OCH3, --CH3, --C2 H5, --F, --Cl, --Br, --I, --NR7 2, --NHCOR7, --OH, --O-, --SR7, --OR7, --OCOR7, --NO2, --COOH, --COOR7, --COR7, --CHO and --CN, wherein R7 is a C1 -C8 alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group, and wherein the fraction of rings containing at least one R1, R2, R3 or R4 group being an --SO3-, --SO3 H, --R7 SO3-, or --R7 SO3 H varies from approximately 20 percent to one hundred percent, comprising reacting the polyaniline polymer or substituted polyaniline polymer and SO3 gas.
