Abstract

The present invention relates to methods to protect curing cement or concrete from excess evaporative water loss and/or from rain, excess heat loss, or excess heat gain. More particularly the method relates to coating curing cement or concrete with a layer (or layers) of a fibrous mass composed of ground cellulose, water, a viscosity enhancing polymer, a hygroscopic swelling agent and, optionally, additives selected on the basis of the properties desired (e.g., rain resistance, heat absorption from the sun, heat reflectance, or heat insulation). The invention also relates to compositions comprising a layer of cement or concrete and a layer (or layers) of such a fibrous mass.

Claims

1. A method of curing cement or concrete comprising:

coating said cement or concrete with at least one layer of a curing composition including cellulose fibers, water, a viscosity enhancing polymer and a hygroscopic swelling agent in amounts effective to retain water on the surface of said cement or concrete and to slow the rate of drying of said curing cement or concrete and wherein the amount of said polymer is effective to enhance the cohesiveness of the composition.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein said viscosity enhancing polymer is selected from the group consisting of a marine-derived gum, carraghenan, a cellulose derivative, a polyvinylalcohol, a polyvinylalcohol derivative, and mixtures thereof.

3. The method according to claim 2, wherein said cellulose derivative is selected from the group consisting of methylcellulose, carboxymethylcellulose, ethylcellulose, methyl-propyl-cellulose, and mixtures thereof.

4. The method according to claim 2, wherein said polyvinylalcohol derivative is polyvinylpyrrolidone.

5. The method according to claim 1, wherein said hygroscopic swelling agent is selected from the group consisting of urea, guanidinium hydrochloride, glycerol, ethylene glycol, glycerol monostearate, glycerol distearate, phosphoric acid, and mixtures thereof.

6. The method according to claim 5, wherein said hygroscopic swelling agent is urea.

7. The method according to claim 1, wherein the cellulose fibers are derived from newsprint.

8. The method according to claim 1, wherein said curing composition further includes a solar reflective agent.

9. The method according to claim 8, wherein said solar reflective agent is selected from the group consisting of titanium oxide, aluminum flakes, lithopone, zinc oxide, bleached paper pulp, silica, and mixtures thereof.

10. The method according to claim 1, wherein said curing composition further includes an adhesion reducing compound in an amount effective to reduce the adhesion of said composition to cured cement or concrete.

The method according to claim 10, wherein said adhesion reducing compound selected is from the group consisting of (C₉ to C₂₂) fatty acids and salts thereof, (C₉ to C₂₂) alkyl sulfates and salts thereof, (C₉ to C₂₂) alkyl sulfonates and salts thereof, talc, mica, pyrophillite, montmorillonite, vermiculite, pearlite, aluminum flakes, graphite, and mixtures thereof.

12. The method according to claim 11, wherein the corresponding salts of said fatty acids, alkyl sulfates and alkyl sulfonates are selected from the group consisting of potassium, sodium, C₁ to C₆ alkyl ammonium, and ammonium salts.

13. The method according to claim 11, wherein said adhesion reducing compound is selected from the group consisting of stearic acid, sodium stearate, potassium stearate, ammonium stearate, and mixtures thereof.

14. The method according to claim 1, wherein said curing composition further includes an insulative agent.

15. The method according to claim 14, wherein said insulative agent is selected from the group consisting of vermiculite, fiber glass, asbestos, volcanic ash, mica, and mixtures thereof.

16. The method according to claim 1, wherein said curing composition further includes a solar adsorptive agent.

17. The method according to claim 16, wherein said solar absorptive agent is selected from the group consisting of carbon black, lamp black, black iron oxide, and mixtures thereof.

18. The method according to claim 1, wherein said composition is covered with a film formed from a curing composition comprising aluminum flake pigment, a synthetic resin, and a volatile solvent.

19. The method according to claim 18, wherein said synthetic resin is selected from the group consisting of urethane resin, cellulose acetate, ethylcellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, and mixtures thereof.

25. The method of curing cement or concrete according to claim 1 wherein sd fiber comprises 20-80%, said polymer comprises 2-30% and said swelling agent comprises 5-40% by weight of the total weight of the three components other than water of the curing composition.

26. The method of curing cement or concrete of claim 25 wherein said fiber comprises 40-50% and said swelling agent comprises 15-30% by weight of said three components.

20. A method of curing cement or concrete comprising:

coating said cement or concrete with

(a) a first layer of a curing composition including cellulose fibers, water, a viscosity enhancing polymer and a hygroscopic swelling agent in amounts effective to retain water on the surface of said cement or concrete and to slow the rate of drying of said curing cement or concrete,

(b) a second layer of an insulative composition including a viscosity enhancing polymer and cellulose fibers selected from the group consisting of ground polyethylene coated cardboard, urea-formaldehyde impregnated cardboard, and mixtures thereof, and

(c) at least one additional layer of a curing composition including cellulose fibers, a hydrophobic polymer and a hygroscopic swelling agent.

21. The method according to claim 20, wherein the curing compositions of layers (a) and (c) further comprise an additive selected from the group consisting of a solar reflective agent, a solar adsorptive agent, an insulative agent, an adhesion reducing compound, and mixtures thereof.

22. A cement or concrete composite comprising:

a layer of cement or concrete, and

least one outer layer of a curing composition including cellulose fibers, water, a viscosity enhancing polymer and a hygroscopic swelling agent in amounts effective to retain water on the surface of said cement or concrete and to slow the rate of drying of said curing cement or concrete.

27. The cement or concrete composite according to claim 22 wherein said fiber comprises 20-80%, said polymer comprises 2-30% and said swelling agent comprises 5-40% by weight of the total weight of the three components other than water of the curing composition.

23. A cement or concrete composite comprising:

(i) a first layer of cement or concrete,

(ii) a second layer of a curing composition including cellulose fibers, water, a viscosity enhancing polymer and a hygroscopic swelling agent in amounts effective to retain water on the surface of said cement or concrete and to slow the rate of drying of curing cement or concrete,

(iii) a third layer of an insulative composition including a viscosity enhancing polymer and cellulose fibers selected from the group consisting of ground polyethylene coated cardboard, urea-formaldehyde impregnated cardboard, and mixtures thereof, and

(iv) at least one additional layer of a curing composition including cellulose fibers, a hydrophobic polymer and a hygroscopic swelling agent.

24. The cement or concrete composite according to claim 23, wherein the curing compositions of layers (ii) and (iv) further comprise an additive selected from the group consisting of a solar reflective agent, a solar absorptive agent, an insulative agent, an adhesion reducing compound, and mixtures thereof.
