Abstract

A method and corresponding apparatus for encoding and decoding additional status bits into an existing frame status byte transmitted as part of a packet of information in a communication network. The described scheme provides for the encoding and decoding of two additional status bits, without having to modify the packet format. In the disclosed embodiment of the invention, the additional status bits are used to convey information to a node processor concerning decryption processing of a received information packets.

Claims

1. A method of encoding additional status information in a frame status field for use in a packet to be transmitted over a communication network, the method comprising the steps of:

examining a count subfield of the frame status field to determine how many bit positions of a status subfield are being used;

encoding as many additional status bits into the status subfield as will fit in unused bit positions; and

if not all desired additional status bits can be encoded in the status subfield, encoding at least one additional status bit into a bit position of the count subfield that is not being used for particular count values stored in the subfield.

2. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein:

the count subfield has three bit position and the status subfield has five bit positions;

the count has a maximum value of four, indicating that up to four of the status bit positions are used;

a first additional status bit is encoded in a first status bit position that is never otherwise used;

a second additional status bit is encoded in a second status bit position if the count indicates that the second status bit position will not be used, and otherwise is encoded in one of the bit positions of the count subfield.

3. A method as defined in claim 2, wherein:

the second additional status bit is encoded into the least significant or next to least significant bit position of the count subfield in the event that the count value is greater than three, and is encoded into the second status bit position in the event that the count value is less than four.

4. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein:

the two additional status bits are used to convey cryptographic processing information without defining any additional status bytes in an information packet.

5. A method as defined in claim 2, wherein:

the two additional status bits are used to convey cryptographic processing information without defining any additional status bytes in an information packet.

6. A method as defined in claim 3, wherein:

the two additional status bits are used to convey cryptographic processing information without defining any additional status bytes in an information packet.

7. A method of decoding additional status information from a frame status field in a packet transmitted over a communication network, the method comprising the steps of:

examining a count subfield of the frame status field to determine how many bit positions of a status subfield are being used;

decoding as many additional status bits as are encoded into unused bit positions of the status subfield; and

decoding at least one additional status bit from a bit position of the count subfield that is not being used for particular count values stored in the subfield.

8. A method as defined in claim 7, wherein:

the count subfield has three bit position and the status subfield has five bit positions;

the count has a maximum value of four, indicating that up to four of the status bit positions are used;

a first additional status bit is decoded from a first status bit position that is never otherwise used;

a second additional status bit is decoded from a second status bit position if the count indicates that the second bit position will not be used, and otherwise is decoded from a bit position of the count subfield.

9. A method as defined in claim 8, wherein:

the second additional status bit is decoded from the least significant or next to least significant bit position of the count subfield in the event that the count value is greater than three, and is decoded from the second status bit position in the event that the count value is less than four.

10. A method as defined in claim 7, wherein:

the two additional status bits are used to convey cryptographic processing information without defining any additional status bytes in an information packet.

11. A method as defined in claim 8, wherein:

the two additional status bits are used to convey cryptographic processing information without defining any additional status bytes in an information packet.

12. A method as defined in claim 9, wherein:

the two additional status bits are used to convey cryptographic processing information without defining any additional status bytes in an information packet.

13. Apparatus for encoding additional status information in a frame status field for use in a packet to be transmitted over a communication network, the apparatus comprising:

means for examining a count subfield of the frame status field to determine how many bit positions of a status subfield are being used;

means for encoding as many additional status bits into the status subfield as will fit in unused bit positions; and

means operative if not all desired additional status bits can be encoded in the status subfield, for encoding at least one additional status bit into a bit position of the count subfield that is not being used for particular count values stored in the subfield.

14. Apparatus as defined in claim 13, wherein:

the count subfield has three bit position and the status subfield has five bit positions;

the count has a maximum value of four, indicating that up to four of the status bit positions are used;

a first additional status bit is encoded in a first status bit position that is never otherwise used;

a second additional status bit is encoded in a second status bit position if the count indicates that the second status bit position will not be used, and otherwise is encoded in a bit position of the count subfield.

15. Apparatus as defined in claim 14, wherein:

the second additional status bit is encoded into the least significant or next to least significant bit position of the count subfield in the event that the count value is greater than three, and is encoded into the second status bit position in the event that the count value is less than four.

16. Apparatus for decoding additional status information from a frame status field in a packet transmitted over a communication network, the apparatus comprising:

means for examining a count subfield of the frame status field to determine how many bit positions of a status subfield are being used;

means for decoding as many additional status bits as are encoded into unused bit positions of the status subfield; and

means for decoding at least one additional status bit from a bit position of the count subfield that is not being used for particular count values stored in the subfield.

17. Apparatus as defined in claim 16, wherein:

the count subfield has three bit position and the status subfield has five bit positions;

the count has a maximum value of four, indicating that up to four of the status bit positions are used;

a first additional status bit is decoded from a first status bit position that is never otherwise used;

a second additional status bit is decoded from a second status bit position if the count indicates that the second bit position will not be used, and otherwise is decoded from a bit position of the count subfield.

18. Apparatus as defined in claim 17, wherein:

the second additional status bit is decoded from the least significant or next to least significant bit position of the count subfield in the event that the count value is greater than three, and is decoded from the second status bit position in the event that the count value is less than four.

19. A method of encoding additional status information in a frame status field for use in a pipeline processing sytem in which there is a need to pass additional status from a processor in an intermediate stage of the pipeline, the method comprising the steps of:

examining a count subfield of the frame status field to determine how many bit positions of a status subfield are being used;

encoding as many additional status bits into the status subfield as will fit in unused bit positions; and

if not all desired additional status bits can be encoded in the status subfield, encoding at least one additional status bit into a bit position of the count subfield that is not being used for particular count values stored in the subfield.

20. A method as defined in claim 19, wherein:

the count subfield has three bit position and the status subfield has five bit positions;

the count has a maximum value of four, indicating that up to four of the status bit positions are used;

a first additional status bit is encoded in a first status bit position that is never otherwise used;

a second additional status bit is encoded in a second status bit position if the count indicates that the second status bit position will not be used, and otherwise is encoded in one of the bit positions of the count subfield.

21. A method as defined in claim 20, wherein:

the second additional status bit is encoded into the least significant or next to least significant bit position of the count subfield in the event that the count value is greater than three, and is encoded into the second status bit position in the event that the count value is less than four.

22. A method of decoding additional status information from a frame status field for use in a pipeline processing sytem in which there is a need to pass additional status from a processor in an intermediate stage of the pipeline, the method comprising the steps of:

examining a count subfield of the frame status field to determine how many bit positions of a status subfield are being used;

decoding as many additional status bits as are encoded into unused bit positions of the status subfield; and

decoding at least one additional status bit from a bit position of the count subfield that is not being used for particular count values stored in the subfield.

23. A method as defined in claim 22, wherein:

the count subfield has three bit position and the status subfield has five bit positions;

the count has a maximum value of four, indicating that up to four of the status bit positions are used;

a first additional status bit is decoded from a first status bit position that is never otherwise used;

a second additional status bit is decoded from a second status bit position if the count indicates that the second bit position will not be used, and otherwise is decoded from a bit position of the count subfield.

24. A method as defined in claim 23, wherein:

the second additional status bit is decoded from the least significant or next to least significant bit position of the count subfield in the event that the count value is greater than three, and is decoded from the second status bit position in the event that the count value is less than four.
