An aqueous formulation suitable as a sealing compound or an adhesive for ceramic tiles and containing as essential components,A) from 3 to 30% by weight of plastics particles which consist ofa) from 0.1 to 4% by weight of one or more mercaptosilanes of the general formula I ##STR3## where n is from 1 to 8, R1 and R2 are individually hydrogen or C1 -C4 -alkyl, R3, R4 and R5 are individually C1 -C6 -alkyl or C1 -C6 -alkoxy, with the proviso that one or more of the radicals R3 to R5 is alkoxy, andb) ethylenically unsaturated monomers capable of undergoing free radical polymerization, as the residual amount, the polymer having a glass transition temperature of from -60°
