Abstract

A high-speed ring LAN capable of accommodating at least one public network having a signal transmission rate of 155.57 MHz, and at least one sub-LAN having a signal transmission rate of 100 MHz. The high-speed LAN has a signal transmission rate of 155.52 Mbps×n (n is an even number). SONET (Synchronous Optical NETwork) subframes each comprising a 9 bytes×9 section overhead area and a 261 bytes×9 virtual container 4 (VC-4) area flow in a time-divisional n-multiplexed format. The respective node devices inserted in the transmission path have one or more ports to accommodate sub-LANs or public networks. Information is exchanged in units of a fixed-length packet between a received SONET subframe and an asynchronous packet whereas information is exchanged in units of a byte between the SONET subframe and a synchronous port.

Claims

1. A high-speed ring LAN system for interconnecting a plurality of subnetworks, comprising:

at least one LAN ring-like transmission path for transmitting a plurality of transmission frames in a time-division multiplexed frame form, each of said transmission frames having a predetermined signal transmission rate and comprising at least one control information transmission area for carrying control information for frame transmission and at least one data transmission area for carrying a container frame having a plurality of fixed length time slots; and

a plurality of node devices interconnected by the ring-like transmission path, each node device including;

an interface for accommodating one of the subnetworks;

means for separating the time-division multiplexed frame received from said ring-like transmission path into individual transmission frames to output them on a plurality of channels, respectively;

means for temporarily storing at least a part of respective container frames extracted from the data transmission area of said separated individual transmission frames on said channels;

means for generating a plurality of new transmission frames on each channel at the predetermined signal transmission rate based on a clock signal obtained from a local clock generator and for transferring data packets in the time slots of said container frames derived from said storing means to new container frames of said new transmission frames;

means for time-division multiplexing said new transmission frames including said new container frames to form a time-division multiplexed frame to be transmitted to a next node device through said ring-like transmission path; and

means provided between said storing means and said generating means, for exchanging data packets of a fixed length between at least one of the container frames on said channels and the interface.

2. A high-speed ring LAN system according to claim 1, wherein the packet exchanging means includes:

transmission means for inserting a data packet received from the interface into a time slot of a container frame on one of said channels selected in accordance with the destination of the packet; and

reception means for extracting a packet destined for the interface from a received container frame flowing through a particular one of said channels previously assigned to the interface and supplying the extracted packet to the interface.

3. A high-speed ring LAN system according to claim 1, wherein the packet exchanging means includes:

transmission means for inserting a packet received from the interface into a time slot of a container frame through any one of the plurality of channels; and

reception means for extracting a packet destined for the interface from each of the container frames on the plurality of channels and supplying it to the interface.

A high-speed ring LAN system according to claim 1, wherein the interface includes means for converting a message received from a subnetwork connected to the interface to at least one fixed-length packet including a control information field for use in accessing a time slot area in the container frame, a header field containing information of the destination of the packet, and a user information field container at least a part of the received message;

and

wherein the packet exchanging means exchanges a packet by referring to the control information field and header field in the packet contained in each of the received container frames.

5. A high-speed ring LAN system according to claim 1, wherein said generating means includes means for generating each of said transmission frame at a 125 μ

sec period.

6. A high-speed ring LAN system according to claim 2, wherein said generating means includes means for generating each of said transmission frames at a 125 μ

sec period.

7. A high-speed ring LAN system according to claim 3, wherein said generating means includes means for generating each of said transmission frames at a 125 μ

sec period.

8. A high-speed ring LAN system according to claim 4, wherein said generating means includes means for generating each of said transmission frames at a 125 μ

sec period.

9. A high-speed ring LAN system according to claim 1, wherein said generating means includes means for generating each of said transmission frames at a signal transmission rate of 155.52 Mbps.

10. A high-speed ring LAN system according to claim 2, wherein said generating means includes means for generating each of said transmission frames at a signal transmission rate of 155.52 Mbps.

11. A high-speed ring LAN system according to claim 3, wherein said generating means includes means for generating each of said transmission frames at a signal transmission rate of 155.52 Mbps.

12. A high-speed ring LAN system according to claim 4, wherein said generating means includes means for generating each of said transmission frames at a signal transmission rate of 155.52 Mbps.

A high-speed ring LAN system according to claim 1, wherein said generating means includes means for generating each of said transmission frames so that said time-division multiplexed frame has a signal transmission rate of n times 155.52 Mbps, n is an integer, on said ring-like transmission path.

A high-speed ring LAN system according to claim 2, wherein said generating means includes means for generating each of said transmission frames so that said time-division multiplexed frame has a signal transmission rate of n times 155.52 Mbps, n is an integer, on said ring-like transmission path.

A high-speed ring LAN system according to claim 3, wherein said generating means includes means for generating each of said transmission frames so that said time-division multiplexed frame has a signal transmission rate of n times 155.52 Mbps, n is an integer, on said ring-like transmission path.

16. A high-speed ring LAN system according to claim 4, wherein said generating means includes means for generating each of said transmission frames so that said time-division multiplexed frame has a signal transmission rate of n times 155.52 Mbps, n is an integer, on said ring-like transmission path.

17. A ring LAN system comprising:

at least one ring-like transmission path for transmitting a plurality of transmission frames in a time-division multiplexed frame form, each of said transmission frames having a predetermined signal transmission rate and comprising at least one control information area for carrying control information for frame transmission and at least one data area for carrying a container frame divided into a plurality of fixed length time slots; and

a plurality of node devices interconnected by the ring-like transmission path, each node device including;

at least one interface for connecting a subsystem to said ring LAN system;

means for separating the time-division multiplexed frame received from said ring-like transmission path into individual transmission frames to output them on a plurality of channel paths, respectively;

means for temporarily storing contents of the respective container frames extracted from the data areas of said separated individual transmission frames on said channel paths;

means for generating in parallel a plurality of new transmission frames at the predetermined signal transmission rate based on a clock signal generated from a local clock generator located in the node device and for transferring data packets in said container frames from said storing means to said new transmission frames;

means for time-division multiplexing said new transmission frames to form a time-division multiplexed frame to be transmitted to a next node device through said ring-like transmission path; and

means provided between said storing means and said generating means, for exchanging data packets of a fixed length between the interface and the container frames derived from said storing means.

18. A ring LAN system according to claim 17, wherein said ring-like transmission path comprises at least one optical fiber, and each of said node devices further comprising:

means for converting optical signals received from said optical fiber into electrical signals to supply them to said separating means as said time-division multiplexed frame; and

means for converting an electrical signal representing said time-division multiplexed frame derived from said multiplexing means into optical signals and for sending out said optical signals thus obtained to said optical fiber.

A ring LAN system according to claim 17, wherein some of said node devices are provided with at least one synchronous interface for connecting thereto a subsystem treating synchronous information, respectively, and means for exchanging synchronous data packets between said synchronous interface and container frames received from one of said channel paths assigned for synchronous information transmission.

A ring LAN system according to claim 19, wherein said synchronous data packets exchanging means includes means for adjusting the location of the first byte of the container frame on said new transmission frames according to a difference of the signal transmission rates of the received transmission frames and said new transmission frames.

21. A ring LAN system according to claim 20, wherein said generating means includes means for generating each of said new transmission frames at a 125 μ

sec period.

22. A ring LAN system according to claim 20, wherein said generating means includes means for generating each of said new transmission at a signal transmission rate of 155.52 Mbps substantially.

23. A ring LAN system according to claim 17, wherein some of said node devices are provided with at least one synchronous interface for connecting thereto a subsystem treating synchronous information and at least one asynchronous interface for connecting thereto a subsystem treating asynchronous information, respectively, and said exchanging means includes means for selectively exchanging data packets between container frames received from any one of said channel paths and one of said synchronous interface or said asynchronous interface on the basis of a destination address of said packets.

A ring LAN system according to claim 23, wherein said exchanging means includes means for controlling a relative position in said new transmission frames of said container frame in respective channel paths according to a difference of the signal transmission rates of said received transmission frames and said new transmission frames.

25. A ring LAN system comprising:

at least one ring-like transmission path for transmitting a plurality of transmission frames in a time-division multiplexed frame form, each of said transmission frames having at least one control information area for carrying control information for frame transmission and at least one data area for carrying a container frame divided into a plurality of fixed length time slots; and

a plurality of node devices interconnected by the ring-like transmission path, each node device including;

a plurality of interfaces for connecting thereto subsystems treating synchronous or asynchronous information;

means for separating the time-division multiplexed frame received from said ring-like transmission path into individual transmission frames and for outputting received container frames in said individual transmission frames to a plurality of channel paths in parallel;

means for generating in parallel a plurality of new transmission frames at a predetermined signal transmission rate based on a clock signal generated in said node device locally and for transferring data packets in said container frames to said new transmission frames;

means for time-division multiplexing said new transmission frames to form a multiplexed frame to be transmitted to a next node device through said ring-like transmission path; and

means provided between said separating means and said generating means, for exchanging data packets of a fixed length between an interface and said received container frames.

26. A ring LAN system according to claim 25, wherein said exchanging means includes means for transferring data packets from any one of said interfaces to a new transmission frame on either one of said channel paths specified in accordance with a destination address of said data packets and for transferring a data packet addressed to any one of said interfaces from said received container frames to said addressed interface by judging for respective channel paths whether or not each of the received data packets on each channel path has a destination address corresponding to that of said interface.

27. A ring LAN system according to claim 25, wherein said transmission frames are SONET frames.
