A method of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, the method including the step of injecting into the lumen of an artery occluded by an inflated balloon of a balloon catheter, immediately past a blockage created by the inflated balloon and prior to any ischemia caused by the balloon, an effective amount of a pharmaceutically acceptable magnesium preparation to prevent or delay ischemia.
