Premix boiler construction
First Claim
1. In a boiler, the combination of:
- means for providing a plurality of separate water-ways each bounded by a heat transfer surface and each having an inlet and an outlet;
a combustion chamber;
a burner in said chamber;
means for supplying air and fuel to said burner;
ignition means for igniting the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber;
a plurality of baffles cooperating to present a serpentine flue passage extending adjacent said heat transfer surfaces from said combustion chamber to a flue outlet through which combustion gases are vented, said flue passage having a plurality of successive passes defining a serpentine path;
means for providing a bypass opening in at least one baffle to permit flue gases to flow in restricted amounts through said bypass opening from one pass to the next successive pass to short cut the serpentine path followed by the rest of the flue gases from said one pass to the next successive pass, thereby inhibiting standing waves in the combustion gas pathway; and
said means for providing said bypass opening comprising a notch in at least one preselected baffle and an elongated slit in all baffles except said one preselected baffle, said slits extending for substantial portions of the lengths of the baffles.

Abstract
A gas boiler having a boiler unit constructed by interconnected boiler sections each having an internal waterway bounded by one or more heat transfer surfaces. Baffles on the boiler sections define serpentine flue passages, and the baffles include bypass openings formed by notches and/or slits to suppress standing waves and associated noise. A burner includes a conical burner element having burner ports arranged in clusters to enhance the flame distribution and stability. A distributor cone nested within the burner element provides a pressure drop for noise suppression. The blower shaft is equipped with a magnetic plastic washer which effects a seal against air infiltration while allowing the blower shaft to shift from side to side.

3. In a boiler, the improvement comprising:
-
a plurality of boiler sections each presenting a waterway having an inlet and an outlet and at least one heat transfer surface adjacent the waterway to transfer heat to the water therein; means for connecting said sections together to present a combustion chamber and a serpentine flue passage defined by baffles extending from the boiler sections, said flue passage extending adjacent said heat transfer surfaces and winding back and forth to a flue outlet spaced from the combustion chamber; a burner in said combustion chamber; means for supplying fuel and air to said burner; ignition means for igniting the fuel-air mixture in the combustion chamber; and a dish portion of each heat transfer surface adjacent said combustion chamber to provide an enlarged portion of the corresponding waterway and a recessed portion of the heat transfer surface. - View Dependent Claims (4)

-
means for providing a plurality of separate waterways each bounded by a heat transfer surface and each having an inlet and an outlet; a combustion chamber; a burner in said chamber; means for supplying air and fuel to said burner; ignition means for igniting the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber; a plurality of baffles cooperating to present a serpentine flue passage extending adjacent said heat transfer surfaces from said combustion chamber to a flue outlet through which combustion gases are vented, said flue passage having a plurality of successive passes defining a serpentine path and each baffle having a length dimension defined between a free end thereof and a base end thereof opposite the free end; and an elongated slit through at least one baffle elongated along the length dimension thereof and extending along a substantial portion of the length dimension thereof to permit flue gases to flow in restricted amounts through said slit from one pass to the next successive pass to short cut the serpentine path followed by the rest of the flue gases from said one pass to the next successive pass, thereby inhibiting standing waves in the combustion gas pathway. - View Dependent Claims (6)
