1. A surgical stapler apparatus comprising:
- a tubular housing having a longitudinal axis;
a staple pusher assembly movable mounted in the distal end of said housing for movement between a retracted position within said housing and an extended position for expelling an annular array of staples therefrom;
means mounted concentrically within said staple pusher assembly in spaced relation to said distal end in a proximal direction for selectively releasably mounting a trocar or an anvil assembly therein; and
means for moving said mounting means along the longitudinal axis between a retracted position for preventing removal of a trocar or anvil assembly and an extended position for permitting removal of a trocar or anvil assembly.

Abstract
The end-to-end anastomosis apparatus is provided with a mounting means which can receive a trocar for making holes in tissue and, subsequently, an anvil shaft for the mounting of an anvil assembly for stapling purposes. The anvil shaft is provided with splines which cooperate with splines on a shell liner within the housing of the apparatus to align the buckets on the anvil assembly with the staples in a cartridge secured in the apparatus. In addition, the anvil assembly is provided with a spring for locking of the anvil housing on the anvil shaft.

24. An anvil assembly comprising
a shaft having mounting means at one end for removable mounting in a surgical stapler apparatus; -
an anvil slidably mounted on said shaft at an opposite end, said anvil having a housing and an annular array of buckets on one end face thereof; and a locking means releasably securing said anvil on said shaft, said locking means including a recess in said shaft and a spring in said housing at least partially disposed in said recess to lock said housing on said shaft; and

35. A method of performing a surgical stapling procedure comprising the steps of:
-
(a) providing a surgical stapler apparatus having; (i) a tubular housing; (ii) a staple pusher assembly movably mounted in the distal end of said housing for movement between a retracted position within said housing and an extended position for expelling an annular array of staples therefrom and extending an annular knife concentrically within said array of staples; (iii) first actuating means for moving said staple pusher assembly between said stapler pusher retracted position and said staple pusher extended position; (iv) mounting means movably mounted within said staple pusher assembly in spaced relation to said distal end in a proximal direction for selectively releasably engaging a shaft of one of a trocar or an anvil assembly; and (i) second actuating means connected to said mounting means for moving said mounting means between at least a mounting means retracted position within said staple pusher assembly preventing removal of said trocar or anvil assembly and a mounting means extended position permitting release of said trocar or anvil assembly; (b) inserting said tubular housing into a body having tissue to be joined by anastomosis, said housing having a trocar assembly engaged with said mounting means and said mounting means being positioned in said mounting means retracted position with the tip of said trocar assembly not extending beyond the distal end of said tubular housing; (c) activating said second actuating means to move said mounting means to a position with the tip of said trocar assembly extending beyond the distal end of said tubular housing; (d) piercing said trocar assembly through tissue to be joined by anastomosis; (e) removing said trocar assembly from said mounting means; (f) mounting an anvil assembly to said mounting means; (g) operating said second actuating means to move said mounting means to said mounting means retracted position, thereby restraining said anvil assembly against being removed from said mounting means; (h) operating said first actuating means to move said staple pusher assembly from said staple pusher retracted position to said staple pusher extended position to expel said annular array of staples and form an anastomosis. - View Dependent Claims (36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52)
