Abstract

Method and apparatus for manufacturing an oxygen-free copper having an oxygen content of no greater than 3 ppm by weight are disclosed. In the method, a deoxidizing step is carried out by bringing a reducing gas containing hydrogen gas into contact with a molten copper to react on the oxygen to remove the same. Then a dehydrogenation step may be carried out by bringing a gas of lean hydrogen concentration into contact with the molten copper. Accordingly, the apparatus has a deoxidizing device for blowing the reducing gas into the molten copper and preferably a dehydrogenation device.

Claims

1. An apparatus for manufacturing an oxygen-free copper comprising:

a deoxidizing device for blowing a reducing gas containing hydrogen gas into a molten copper to react with oxygen dissolved in the molten copper to remove the same;

a melting furnace connected to said deoxidizing device for melting a copper material to produce said molten copper;

a dehydrogenating device connected to said deoxidizing device for exposing the molten copper treated in said deoxidizing device to an ambient gas comprised of a gas with a low hydrogen partial pressure to remove hydrogen dissolved in the molten copper; and

a continuous casting machine for casting the molten copper thus dehydrogenated.

2. A manufacturing apparatus according to claim 1, in which said deoxidizing device includes a container having an inlet for the molten copper at one end and an outlet at the other end, and a nozzle mounted in the bottom of said container for blowing said reducing gas into said molten copper.

3. A manufacturing apparatus according to claim 2, in which said container includes a partition gate to divide an inside of the container into an upstream bubbling chamber and a downstream up-flow chamber, said nozzle being mounted in said bubbling chamber.

A manufacturing apparatus according to claim 3, further comprising a sealed tundish disposed between said dehydrogenating device and said casting machine, and a first launder disposed hermetically sealably between said melting furnace and said deoxidizing device so as to be inclined downwardly toward said deoxidizing device.

A manufacturing apparatus according to claim 4, in which said dehydrogenating device is comprised of a second launder disposed hermetically sealably between said deoxidizing device and said tundish and gas supply means connected to said second launder for introducing said ambient gas thereinto, said second launder being greater in length and width than said first launder and being inclined at a gentler inclination angle than said first launder.

6. A manufacturing apparatus according to claim 5, in which said gas supply means comprises an ambient gas source and a pipe connected at one end to said second launder and at the other end to said gas source.

A manufacturing apparatus according to claim 6, further comprising a sealed chamber between said tundish and said casting machine, and pipes each connected at one end to a respective one of said tundish and said sealed chamber and at the other end to said gas supply means for introducing said ambient gas into said tundish and said sealed chamber.

8. A manufacturing apparatus according to claim 7, further comprising means attached to said up-flow chamber for introducing said ambient gas thereinto.

9. A manufacturing apparatus according to claim 8, in which said second launder includes a plurality of stepped portions spaced along a longitudinal length thereof.

10. An apparatus for manufacturing an oxygen-free copper comprising:

a deoxidizing device for blowing a reducing gas containing hydrogen gas into a molten copper to react with oxygen dissolved in the molten copper to remove the same;

a melting furnace connected to said deoxidizing device for melting a copper material to produce said molten copper; and

a dehydrogenating device connected to said deoxidizing device for exposing the molten copper treated in said deoxidizing device to an ambient gas comprised of a gas with a low hydrogen partial pressure to remove hydrogen dissolved in the molten copper.

11. A manufacturing apparatus according to claim 10, in which said deoxidizing device includes a container having an inlet for the molten copper at one end and an outlet at the other end, and a nozzle mounted in the bottom of said container for blowing said reducing gas into said molten copper.

12. A manufacturing apparatus according to claim 11, in which said container includes a partition gate to divide an inside of the container into an upstream bubbling chamber and a downstream up-flow chamber, said nozzle being mounted in said bubbling chamber.

13. A manufacturing apparatus according to claim 12, further comprising a sealed casting mole.

14. A manufacturing apparatus according to claim 13, further comprising a first launder hermetically sealably disposed between said melting furnace and said deoxidizing device so as to be inclined downwardly toward said deoxidizing device.
