1. A system for detecting the presence of an analyte in or a property of blood, comprising:

  • a housing containing a capillary passageway capable of independently pumping blood into said passageway as the sole motive source in said passageway;

    a reagent contained within said passageway capable of causing said blood to clot to provide a detectable signal in relationship to said analyte or property; and

    a monitor comprising means for holding said housing, means for passing light through said capillary passageway, means for detecting scattering of light that passes through said passageway, and means for analyzing scattered light to determine when clotting occurs in said passageway.
