1. A reagent composition for the detection of an analyte in an aqueous sample which comprises:

  • (1) a water soluble cobalt(III) complex which is capable of being reduced to a water soluble cobalt(II) complex by said analyte and,(2) a water soluble dye which is capable of being metallized by said cobalt(II) complex to form a water soluble cobalt(II) complex of the metallizable dye, wherein said cobalt(II) complex of the metallizable dye is capable of reacting with said cobalt(III) complex to produce a cobalt(III) complex of the metallizable dye and the cobalt(II) complex; and

    (3) a water soluble polymer.
