1. A catheter guidewire monitoring system comprising:
- a housing to contain a conductive catheter guidewire displaceable within the housing;
a conductor secured to the housing;
a port in the housing through which a distal end of guidewire can enter or exit the housing; and
engaging means mounted on the housing to cause electrical contact between a guidewire when positioned within the housing and the conductor such that the conductor transmits an electrical signal from a guidewire when in place within the housing.

Abstract
A guidewire advancement system for inserting catheter guidewires into blood vessels, and more particularly a guidewire dispensing system for the controlled sterile insertion of a coiled spring guidewire to avoid infection of the patient. The system provides for the transmission of an electrical signal by the guidewire to determine its location within the body.

5. A method of monitoring the position of a catheter guidewire within a body lumen comprising:
-
inserting a conductive catheter guidewire into a body lumen; coupling a conductor to the guidewire to transmit an electrical signal from the guidewire to the conductor; electrically connecting the conductor to a monitor such that the monitor receives the signal from the guidewire; and determining the position of a distal end of the guidewire from the monitored signal. - View Dependent Claims (6)

7. A method of monitoring the position of a catheter guidewire within a body lumen comprising:
-
providing a conductive catheter guidewire within a housing; locating a distal end of the guidewire in a body lumen; coupling a conductor to a portion of the guidewire remaining outside the body lumen to transmit an electrical signal from the guidewire to the conductor; and electrically connecting the conductor to a monitor such that the monitor receives the signal from the guidewire to determine the position of the distal end of the guidewire from the monitored signal. - View Dependent Claims (8)
