1. A linear power amplifier system for a transmitter, comprising:

  • a linear power amplifier for amplifying a transmission signal having a power control means for controlling output power and current drain of the power amplifier;

    wherein amplification of said transmission signal causes the power amplifier to have a non-constant current drain;

    a temperature sensor for generating a temperature signal corresponding to the ambient temperature;

    a controller responsive to the temperature signal for reducing the output power when the ambient temperature drops below a predetermined level;

    a battery for providing the supply current for the power amplifier; and

    a voltage sensor coupled to the battery for sensing battery voltage, wherein the controller is responsive to the voltage sensor for adjusting the output so as to maintain the battery voltage above a predetermined threshold at cold temperatures.
