Abstract

A method for determining the concentration of a constituent of blood employing a sensor in or near a catheter in a blood vessel for producing a signal related to the concentration of the constituent of blood is disclosed. The improvement comprises obtaining the signal while at least one of the following is present in the blood vessel: (1) an added vasodilator component and/or vasodilation promotor in an amount effective to reduce the vasoconstriction caused by the presence of the catheter in the blood vessel and (2) an added platelet/white cell inhibitor component and/or a platelet/white cell deactivation promotor in an amount effective to reduce the platelet and/or white cell activation caused by the presence of the catheter in the blood vessel.

Claims

1. In a method for determining the concentration of a constituent of blood of a patient employing a sensor located in a blood vessel for producing a signal related to the concentration of said constituent of blood, the improvement which comprises obtaining said signal while at least one of the following is introduced into said blood vessel:

(1) at least one of an added vasodilator component and an added vasodilation promoter in an amount effective to reduce the vasoconstriction caused by the presence of said sensor in said blood vessel and (2) at least one of an added platelet/white cell inhibitor component and an added platelet/white cell deactivation promoter in an amount effective to reduce at least one of;

(A) the platelet activation caused by the presence of said sensor in said blood vessel; and

(B) the white cell activation caused by the presence of said sensor in said blood vessel;

thereby providing a more accurate determination of the concentration of the blood constituent.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said sensor is located in a catheter in said blood vessel.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said sensor extends from a catheter located in said blood vessel.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said added component, components, promotor or promotors are introduced into said blood vessel through said catheter.

The method of claim 1 wherein said signal is obtained while both (1) at least one of said added vasodilator component and said added vasodilation promoter and (2) at least one of said added platelet/white cell inhibitor component and said added platelet/white cell deactivation promotor are introduced into said blood vessel.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein both said added vasodilator component and said added platelet/white cell inhibitor component are introduced into said blood vessel.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein said added vasodilator component is also said added platelet/white cell inhibitor component.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein said added vasodilator component is selected from the group consisting% of prostaglandin E₁, analogs of prostaglandin E₁, prostaglandin E₂ analogs of prostaglandin E₂, prostacyclin I₂, analogs of prostacyclin I₂ and mixtures thereof.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein said added vasodilator component is selected from the group consisting of prostaglandin E₁, analogs of prostaglandin E₁ and mixtures thereof.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein both said added vasodilation promoter and said added platelet/white cell deactivation promotor are introduced into said blood vessel.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein said added vasodilation promotor is also said added platelet/white cell deactivation promotor.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein said added vasodilation promotor is selected from the group consisting of defibrotide, analogs of defibrotide and mixtures thereof.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein said added component, components, promotor or promotors have an effective half life in the range of about 0.1 to about 5 minutes.

14. The method of claim 8 wherein said added vasodilator component is introduced in an amount in the range of about 1 pico gram to about 100 pico grams per kilogram of patient body weight per minute.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein said signal is obtained from an optical sensor.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein said signal is obtained from a fluorescence sensor.

17. The method of claim 1 wherein said constituent of blood is selected from oxygen, carbon dioxide, H⁺, glucose and other electrolytes.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein the concentration of at least one additional different blood constituent is also sensed.

19. A method for determining the concentration of a constituent of a patient'"'"'s blood comprising:

introducing the distal end portion of a catheter into a blood vessel of a patient, said catheter having an interior space and an opening in said distal end portion;

placing a sensor in or near said interior space, said sensor being for sensing the concentration of a constituent in the patient'"'"'s blood and providing a signal in response thereto;

introducing into said patient at least one of the following components;

a vasodilator component, a vasodilation promotor, a platelet/white cell inhibitor component and a platelet/white cell deactivation promotor; and

obtaining said signal while at least one of the following is introduced into said blood vessel;

(1) at least one of said vasodilator component and said vasodilation promotor in an amount effective to reduce the vasoconstriction caused by the presence of said catheter in said blood vessel and (2) at least one of said platelet/white cell inhibitor component and said platelet/white cell deactivation promotor in an amount effective to reduce at least one of;

(A) the platelet activation caused by the presence of said catheter in said blood vessel; and

(B) the white cell activation caused by the presence of said catheter in said blood vessel;

thereby providing a more accurate determination of the concentration of the blood constituent.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein said sensor is located in said catheter in said blood vessel.

21. The method of claim 19 wherein said sensor is located distally of said catheter.

22. The method of claim 19 wherein said component, components, promotor or promotors are introduced into said blood vessel.

23. The method of claim 19 wherein said component, components, promotor or promotors are introduced into said blood vessel through said catheter.

24. The method of claim 19 wherein said signal is obtained while both (1) at least one of said vasodilator component and said vasodilation promotor and (2) at least one of said platelet/white cell inhibitor component and said platelet/white cell deactivation promotor are introduced into said blood vessel.

25. The method of claim 19 wherein both said vasodilator component and said platelet/white cell inhibitor component are introduced into said blood vessel.

26. The of claim 19 wherein said vasodilator component is also said platelet/white cell inhibitor component.

27. The method of claim 19 wherein said added vasodilator component is selected from the group consisting of prostaglandin E₁, analogs of prostaglandin E₁, prostaglandin E₂ analogs of prostaglandin E₂, prostacyclin I₂, analogs of prostacyclin I₂ and mixtures thereof.

28. The method of claim 19 wherein said added vasodilator component is selected from the group consisting of prostaglandin E₁, analogs of prostaglandin E₁ and mixtures thereof.

29. The method of claim 19 wherein both said vasodilation promotor and said platelet/white cell deactivation promotor are introduced into said blood vessel.

30. The method of claim 29 wherein said vasodilation promotor is also said platelet/white cell deactivation promotor.

31. The method of claim 19 wherein said vasodilation promotor is selected from the group consisting of defibrotide, analogs of defibrotide and mixtures thereof.

32. The method of claim 19 wherein said component, components, promotor or promotors have an effective half life in the range of about 0.1 minute to about 5 minutes.

33. The method of claim 27 wherein said vasodilator component is introduced in an amount in the range of about 1 pico gram to about 100 pico grams per kilogram of patient body weight per minute.

34. The method of claim 19 wherein said signal is obtained from an optical sensor.

35. The method of claim 19 wherein said signal is obtained from a fluorescence sensor.

36. The method of claim 19 wherein said constituent of blood is selected from oxygen, carbon dioxide, H⁺, glucose and other electrolytes.

37. The method of claim 19 wherein the concentration of at least one additional difference blood constituent is also sensed.

38. The method of claim 19 wherein said component, components, promotor or promotors are introduced using an infusion pump.

39. The method of claim 19 wherein said component, components, promotor or promotors are introduced in a mixture with an anti-clotting solution.
