Abstract

An improved photographic support, especially useful for color prints, is comprised of a paper base material having thereon a polyolefin coating containing a white pigment and an optical brightener, such as a mixture comprising inclusion compounds of certain fluorescent bis(benzoxazolyl)-stilbenes.

Claims

1. A photographic element comprising a paper support, and on at least one side thereof a polyolefin coating containing an inclusion compound of an optical brightener and an α

, β

, or γ

cyclodextrin.

2. The photographic element of claim 1 wherein said cyclodextrin is a β

cyclodextrin.

3. The photographic element of claim 1 wherein said cyclodextrin is a β

cyclodextrin having a substituent bonded to an oxygen atom in a glucose unit in said cyclodextrin, said substituent being selected from the class consisting of;

a) alkyl radicals having 1 to 6 carbon atoms,

b) radicals having the formula --(--CH--CH--R¹ --O--)_n --H wherein R¹ is selected from hydrogen and alkyl radicals having up to about six carbon atoms, and n is equal to a small whole number up to six, and

c) radicals having the formula --CHR¹ --CHOH--CHR¹ -- wherein R¹ has the same definition as above, such that said radicals bridge two cyclodextrin rings, and the number of said rings so bridged per molecule is from two to about six;

said substituted cyclodextrin having not more than two substituents per glucose unit.

4. A photographic element according to claim 3 wherein said cyclodextrin is a β

-cyclodextrin.

5. A photographic element according to claim 4 wherein said substituent is an alkyl radical having 1 to six carbon atoms.

6. A photographic element according to claim 5 wherein the average number of alkyl radicals per glucose unit is in the range of from about one to about two.

7. A photographic element of claim 6 wherein said alkyl radical is a methyl group.

8. A photographic element according to claim 4 wherein the cyclodextrin has a substituent selected from radicals having said formula

9. A photographic element according to claim 8 wherein the average number of substituents per glucose unit is in the range of from 1 to about 2.0.

10. A photographic element according to claim 9 wherein said substituent is 2-hydroxypropyl.

11. A photographic element according to claim 9 wherein said substituent is hydroxyethyl.

12. A photographic element according to claim 4 wherein said substituent has the formula --CNR¹ --CHON--CHR¹, bridging two cyclodextrin rings, and the average number of rings so bridged per molecule of substituted cyclodextrin is from two to about six.

13. The photographic element of claim 1 wherein said optical brightener is a compound having the formula:

##STR3## wherein R¹ and R² are independently selected from hydrogen and alkyl radicals having up to about six carbon atoms.

14. The photographic element of claim 13 wherein R¹ and R² are hydrogen.

15. The photographic element of claim 1 wherein said optical brightener is a mixture of 15-90 percent by weight of the total weight of said mixture of ##STR4## - 70percent by weight based on the total weight of said mixture of ##STR5## - 70percent by weight based on the total weight of said mixture of ##STR6##

16. The photographic element of claim 15 wherein said optical brightener is a mixture of about 60 percent by weight compound (A), 25 percent by weight compound (B), and about 15 percent by weight compound (C).
