Novel amino acid-derived polycarbonates and amino acid-derived diphenol compound starting materials from which the polycarbonates are polymerized. Polymer blends of the amino acid-derived polycarbonates with polyiminocarbonates prepared from identical amino acid-derived diphenol starting materials.

A polymer blend comprising a first polymer comprising a polycarbonate, prepared by polymerizing a diphenol starting material with phosgene, and a second polymer comprising apolyiminocarbonate, prepared by polymerizing a diphenol starting material with a reactant selected from the group consisting of cyanogen bromide and dicyanates, wherein said first and second polymers are derived from the same diphenol starting material and wherein said diphenol is an amino acid derivative.
