Process and apparatus for dry sterilization of medical devices and materials
First Claim
1. Apparatus for sterilization and treatment of narrow bore, elongated and generally tubular devices in a gas plasma comprising,an elongated gas-confining chamber containing an elongated device to be sterilized and treated, formed with a generally cylindrical wall,at least two gas permeable and microorganism-impervious membranes generally of round cross section for sealing each free end of said chamber containing said elongated device to be sterilized and treated, means for connecting said chamber to a gas delivery system at a first end of said chamber, means for connecting said chamber to a gas exhaust system at a second end of said chamber, means for evacuating said chamber through one of said membranes and for flowing gas through said chamber through one of said membranes, andmeans for applying a suitable high frequency electromagnetic field in close proximity to said chamber.

1. Apparatus for sterilization and treatment of narrow bore, elongated and generally tubular devices in a gas plasma comprising,
an elongated gas-confining chamber containing an elongated device to be sterilized and treated, formed with a generally cylindrical wall, at least two gas permeable and microorganism-impervious membranes generally of round cross section for sealing each free end of said chamber containing said elongated device to be sterilized and treated, means for connecting said chamber to a gas delivery system at a first end of said chamber, means for connecting said chamber to a gas exhaust system at a second end of said chamber, means for evacuating said chamber through one of said membranes and for flowing gas through said chamber through one of said membranes, and means for applying a suitable high frequency electromagnetic field in close proximity to said chamber.

5. A method for sterilization and treatment of narrow bore, elongated and generally tubular devices comprising the steps of,
placing an elongated device within a generally cylindrical, narrow, elongated gas-tight confining chamber, said chamber having an inside diameter at least one and one half times that of an outer diameter of said elongated device, said chamber being sealed at both ends with gas permeable membranes to provide a plugged chamber, said membranes being impervious to microorganisms, said plugged chamber being removably connected through said membranes to a gas delivery system at one end and to a gas exhaust system at another end, evacuating said plugged chamber through said gas exhaust system to a low pressure and introducing a gas from said gas delivery system into said plugged chamber, wherein said gas is selected from the group consisting of, an oxidizing gas, a reducing gas, and a gaseous mixture of oxygen and any one of the gases consisting of, nitrogen, argon, helium or halogen, initiating an electrical discharge in said gas within said plugged chamber by application of a high frequency electromagnetic field in close proximity to said plugged chamber, creating a gas plasma within said plugged chamber, whereby said elongated device is contacted by plasma active species along its entire outer and inner surfaces at a temperature below that which would be detrimental to said elongated device, maintaining said gas plasma for a controlled period of time, maintaining a flow of said gas through said plugged chamber, disconnecting said plugged chamber from said gas delivery system and said gas exhaust system, without removal of said membranes from said plugged chamber, and withdrawing said plugged chamber from said close proximity of said high frequency electromagnetic field, and storing said elongated device within said plugged chamber.
