1. A submersible molten metal pump comprising:
- a pump casing having a cylindrical non-volute pump chamber defined therein, at least one inlet opening, and a tangential discharge opening;
a rotor in said chamber sized to fit through said at least one inlet opening;
a rotor shaft attached to said rotor and extending upwardly therefrom,at least one support post attached to said casing and extending upwardly therefrom in parallel with said rotor shaft, andsuperstructure positioned above said casing and includinga mounting plate,means on said plate engaging said at least one support post,a motor mount attached to said plate,a motor on said motor mount, andcoupling means for operatively connecting said motor to said rotor shaft.

Abstract
This invention relates to a submersible molten metal pump with a stock pump casing suitable for use as a circulation pump, a transfer pump, or a gas injection pump. The submersible molten metal pump is characterized by a pump casing having a cylindrical non-volute pump chamber with an inlet at the bottom and a tangential discharge opening. Also, the pump contains a triangle shaped rotor and support posts with tapered ends to allow for greater stability.

1. A submersible molten metal pump comprising:

a pump casing having a cylindrical non-volute pump chamber defined therein, at least one inlet opening, and a tangential discharge opening; a rotor in said chamber sized to fit through said at least one inlet opening; a rotor shaft attached to said rotor and extending upwardly therefrom, at least one support post attached to said casing and extending upwardly therefrom in parallel with said rotor shaft, and superstructure positioned above said casing and including a mounting plate, means on said plate engaging said at least one support post, a motor mount attached to said plate, a motor on said motor mount, and coupling means for operatively connecting said motor to said rotor shaft. - View Dependent Claims (2, 3, 5, 11, 12)

A device for engaging a support post on a superstructure of a submersible molten metal pump, comprising a support post clamp having opposite symmetrical halves, each half including a flange portion mountable to said superstructure, and an upstanding half cylindrical portion having an effective inner diameter slightly larger than a diameter of the support post, and a through-bolt hole disposed in each symmetrical half, such that a through-bolt penetrates each through-bolt hole and a diameter of said support post, and wherein when said flange portions are mounted to said superstructure, said support post is moved into perpendicular alignment therewith.

A rotor for a submersible molten metal pump which has a pump casing having a cylindrical non-volute pump chamber defined therein, at least one inlet opening, and a tangential discharge opening, said rotor comprising an imperforate polygonal member having a center axis and being sized to fit in the inlet opening.

13. Superstructure for a submersible molten metal pump which includes a pump casing having a pump chamber defined therein, at least one support post attached to the casing and extending upwardly therefrom, said superstructure being positioned above said casing and comprising:
- a mounting plate, means on said plate engaging the at least one support post, a motor mount attached to said plate, and a cooling air shroud extending between said mounting plate and said motor mount and above said motor mount, said shroud having inlet means for supplying cooling air.

A pump casing for a submersible molten metal pump comprising a rectangular, in plan view, monoblock of a heat-resistant material having a cylindrical, non-volute chamber, at least one circular inlet opening coaxial with said chamber, a discharge opening having an axis tangential to said chamber, and at least one cylindrical support post hole extending through said monoblock having an axis in parallel with an axis of said chamber.

A pump casing for a submersible molten metal pump comprising a block of a heat-resistant material having a pump chamber defined therein, said chamber having an axis and upper and lower circumferential edges, at least one circular inlet opening coaxial with said chamber, a discharge opening having an axis tangential to said chamber, at least one cylindrical support post hole in said block having an axis in parallel with said axis of said chamber, said block having a stepped surface defined at each of the upper and lower circumferential edges, an upper ring member having an outer periphery corresponding and mating with said stepped surface at said lower circumferential edge, said chamber being defined solely by a bore in said block and said two ring members coaxially mounted on said stepped surfaces.

19. A pump assembly for a submersible molten metal pump comprising a casing having defined therein a non-volute pump chamber for housing a rotor, at least one inlet opening into said chamber and discharge opening having an axis aligned tangentially to said chamber;
- an exit adaptor; and

A support post for a submersible molten metal pump for suspending a casing having a vertical bore therethrough from a mounting plate having an opening therein and a post clamp mounted in line with the opening and extending upwardly therefrom, said post comprising a cylindrical body of refractory material having opposite ends, one of said ends having a stepped portion fitable through said opening and in said post clamp, and having a diametral bore for receiving a pin;
- the other of said ends having another stepped portion defined by an upper locating shoulder and including an axially extending circumferential adhesives groove, said another stepped portion being sized to fit said vertical bore and extend therethrough with said upper locating shoulder being positioned such that said other end is approximately flush with a bottom of the casing when said post is inserted in said vertical bore, said other of said ends further including an adhesive passageway opening into said circumferential adhesives groove.

A pump casing for a submersible molten metal pump, comprising a block of heat-resistant material having a non-volute pump chamber defined therein, said pump chamber having an axis, at least one circular inlet opening coaxial with said chamber, a discharge opening having an axis tangential to said chamber, at least one cylindrical support post hole in said block having a stepped surface defined at an upper periphery of said chamber and a stepped surface defined at a lower periphery of said chamber, and ring members having outer peripheries corresponding and mating with said stepped surfaces, and inner peripheries defining said at least one circular inlet opening, said chamber being defined solely by a bore in said block and said ring members coaxially mounted on said stepped surfaces.
