Abstract

An improved method and apparatus for automatically controlling the direction of advance of a rotary drill to produce a borehole profile substantially as preplanned with minimal curvature while maintaining optimum drilling performance. The system is capable of storing a planned path for the borehole. Information relating to the profile of the actual drill path is compared to the planned path and an appropriate correction signal is generated and used to cause the borehole to be drilled in accordance with the planned path.

Claims

1. A system for controlled drilling of a borehole, comprising:

means for drilling a borehole;

means positioned in said borehole for storing a planned borehole path;

means positioned in said borehole for obtaining instantaneous downhole information relating to the depth of said drilling means within said borehole for providing a profile of an actual drilled path of said borehole;

means positioned in said borehole for comparing said actual drilled path with said planned path and for generating a correction signal representing the difference between said actual drilled path and said planned path; and

means responsive to said correction signal to cause said drilling means to drill said borehole along a corrected path to cause the drilled borehole path to coincide with said planned path.

2. The system according to claim 1, further comprising means for obtaining information relating to the instantaneous direction of said borehole and means for utilizing said depth information and said direction information to provide said profile of the drilled borehole path.

3. The system according to claim 2, further comprising communication means for transmitting an updated path plan from the surface to means controlling the direction of said borehole.

4. The system according to claim 3, further comprising a replaceable memory module for transmitting an updated path from the surface to means controlling the direction of said borehole.

5. The system according to claim 4, said communication system comprising two way telemetry between said surface and said control means in said borehole.

The system according to claim 5, further comprising calculation means operably connected to said means for controlling the direction of said borehole, said calculation means being placed in said borehole, said calculation means being capable of receiving said updated planned borehole plan from the surface.

7. The system according to claim 6, said calculation means comprising means for implementing an adaptive directional control algorithm based on parametric directional control equations.

8. The system according to claim 7, said control means being operable to implement said parametric directional control equation and to provide an output signal in accordance to an adaptive curvature factor and an adaptive direction offset.

9. The system according to claim 8, said means for calculating comprising means for determining rate of penetration of said drill bit.

10. The system according to claim 9, further comprising means for determining the depth of said drill bit in said borehole from the borehole'"'"'s surface.

11. The system according to claim 10, said calculation means receiving output signals from said depth determining means, said calculating means being operable to calculate downhole measured depth as a function of downloaded surface measure depth and integral downhole measured incremental depth.

12. The system according to claim 11, further comprising means for calculating weight-on-bit and shear force on the bit.

13. A system for controlled drilling of a directional borehole, comprising,

means for drilling a borehole;

means for controlling the direction of said drilling means;

means positioned in said borehole for storing a planned path for a borehole;

means positioned in said borehole for obtaining information relating to the instantaneous depth of said drilling means within said borehole;

means positioned in said borehole for obtaining information relating to the instantaneous direction of said borehole;

means for utilizing said depth information and said direction information to provide a profile of the drilled path;

means for comparing said drilled path with said planned path and for generating a correction signal representing the difference between said drill path and said planned path;

calculation means operable connected to said means for controlling the direction of said borehole, said calculation means being capable of receiving an updated planned borehole path from the surface, said calculation means comprising means for implementing adaptive directional control based on parametric directional control equations; and

means responsive to said correction signal to cause said drilling means to calculate a corrected path to cause the drilled borehole path to coincide with said planned path.

14. The system according to claim 13, further comprising communication means for transmitting said updated path plan from the surface to means controlling the direction of said borehole.

15. The system according to claim 14, said communication system comprising two way telemetry between said surface and said control means in said borehole.

16. The system according to claim 15, said means for calculating comprising means for determining rate of penetration of said drill bit.

17. The system according to claim 16, further comprising means for determining the depth of said drill bit in said borehole from the borehole'"'"'s surface.

18. The system according to claim 17, said calculation means receiving output signals from said depth determining means, said calculating means being operable to calculate downhole measured depth as a function of downloaded surface measure depth and integral downhole measured incremental depth.

19. The system according to claim 18, further comprising means for calculating weight-on-bit and shear force on the bit.

20. A system for controlled drilling of a borehole comprising:

means for drilling a borehole;

means positioned in said borehole for storing a planned borehole path;

means positioned in said borehole for obtaining information relating to the depth of said drilling means within said borehole;

means positioned in said borehole for calculating the actual drilled path of said borehole;

means positioned in said borehole for comparing said actual drilled path with said planned path and for generating a signal representing the difference between said actual drilled path and said planned path; and

means responsive to said signal to cause said drilling means to drill said borehole along said planned path.

21. The system according to claim 20, said means responsive to said signal to cause said drilling means to drill said borehole along said planned path comprising means for calculating a corrected borehole profile which connects the actual drilled borehole path with a point on the planned borehole path.

22. The system according to claim 21, said means responsive to said signal to cause said drilling means to drill said borehole along said planned path further comprising means for comparing a measured curvature of said actual borehole with a desired value of curvature and using the difference between said actual curvature and said desired curvature to calculate control parameters used to control said drilling means.
