Abstract

An inexpensive circuit for controlling the recharging of a rechargeable power source by a photovoltaic panel is used for powering a load such as the lamp of a walk light. Using a minimum number of components, the circuit can charge a rechargeable battery anytime sunlight is sufficient to place a potential across the battery that is greater than the present potential of the battery, can sense a decrease in voltage across the photovoltaic panel with diminishing ambient light and energize the load, can prevent the load from being energized when the ambient light level is sufficient to re-charge the battery, can provide positive feedback at turn-on of the load, thereby hastening turn-on and providing hysteresis, can provide for adjusting the hysteresis bands, can shift the turn-on and turn-off thresholds, and can provide an adequate current to guarantee turn-on when using low leakage solar panels. A further embodiment can additionally exhibit hysteresis at load turn-off so that the load does not cycle on and off and can further raise the load turn-off threshold above the level where the battery is substantially discharged, thereby hastening recharging of the battery. A still further embodiment provides temperature compensation for improved performance.

Claims

1. A solar rechargeable apparatus comprising:

a rechargeable power source;

a solar panel connected to the rechargeable power source for supplying a charging current to the rechargeable power source;

a device connected between the rechargeable power source and the solar panel to prevent discharge of current from the rechargeable power source to the solar panel;

a load; and

a switching circuit connected between said load and said rechargeable power source and responsive to the potential of said solar panel and the potential of said rechargeable power source, said switching circuit operatively adapted to permit current to flow from said rechargeable power source through said load when the potential across said solar panel is less than the potential across said rechargeable power source, and further in which the switching circuit is further characterized as operatively adapted to permit current to flow from said rechargeable power source through said load when the potential across said solar panel is less than the combined potential across said rechargeable power source and a predetermined potential.

2. A solar rechargeable apparatus comprising:

a rechargeable power source;

a solar panel connected to the rechargeable power source for supplying a charging current to the rechargeable power source;

a device connected between the rechargeable power source and the solar panel to prevent discharge of current from the rechargeable power source to the solar panel;

a load; and

a switching circuit connected between said load and said rechargeable power source and responsive to the potential of said solar panel and the potential of said rechargeable power source, said switching circuit operatively adapted to permit current to flow from said rechargeable power source through said load when the potential across said solar panel is less than the potential across said rechargeable power source and further in which said switching circuit comprises;

a first switching device connected between the load and a side of the rechargeable power source, said first switching device adapted to control the flow of current through the load; and

a second switching device for operating said first device and connected thereto, said second switching device operated by the relative potentials across said solar panel and said rechargeable power source.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 in which said second switching device operates said first switching device to shut off the flow of current therethrough when the potential across said solar panel is less than the potential across said rechargeable power source.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 in which said second switching device operates said first switching device to shut off the flow of current therethrough when the potential across said solar panel is less than the sum of the potential across said rechargeable power source and a predetermined potential.

5. The apparatus of claim 2 in which said second switching device operates said first switching device to shut off the flow of current therethrough when the potential between said solar panel and said device for preventing discharge of current from the rechargeable power source to the solar panel is less than the potential between said rechargeable power source and said device for preventing discharge of current from the rechargeable power source to the solar panel.

6. The apparatus of claim 2 further comprising:

a feedback circuit connected from said first switching device to said second switching device, said feedback circuit adapted to hasten operation of said first switching device to permit flow through said load by providing positive feedback to said second switching device.

The apparatus of claim 2 in which said second switching device operates said first switching device to shut of the flow of current therethrough when the potential across said device for preventing discharge of current from said rechargeable power source to the solar panel is greater than a predetermined amount.

8. A solar rechargeable apparatus comprising:

a rechargeable power source;

a solar panel connected to the rechargeable power source for supplying a charging current to the rechargeable power source;

a device connected between the rechargeable power source and the solar panel to prevent discharge of current from the rechargeable power source to the solar panel;

a load; and

a switching circuit connected between said load and said rechargeable power source and responsive to the potential of said solar panel and the potential of said rechargeable power source, said switching circuit operatively adapted to permit current to flow from said rechargeable power source through said load when the potential across said solar panel is less than the potential across said rechargeable power source and further in which the switching circuit is further characterized as operatively adapted to permit current to flow from said rechargeable power source through said load when the potential across said solar panel is less than the combined potential across said rechargeable power source and said device for preventing discharge of current from the rechargeable power source to the solar panel.

9. A solar rechargeable apparatus comprising:

a rechargeable power source;

a solar panel connected to the rechargeable power source for supplying a charging current to the rechargeable power source;

a device connected between the rechargeable power source and the solar panel to prevent discharge of current from the rechargeable power source to the solar panel;

a load; and

a switching circuit connected between said load and said rechargeable power source and responsive to the potential of said solar panel and the potential of said rechargeable power source, said switching circuit operatively adapted to permit current to flow from said rechargeable power source through said load when the potential across said solar panel is less than the potential across said rechargeable power source and further wherein the load is an electric lamp.

10. A circuit comprising:

a load;

a rechargeable energy source;

a photovoltaic panel connected to the rechargeable energy source to supply current to the rechargeable energy source when the voltage across the photovoltaic panel is greater than the voltage across the rechargeable energy source by a first pre-established amount; and

means responsive to the photovoltaic panel and to the rechargeable energy source;

for enabling current to flow through the load from the rechargeable energy source when the voltage across the photovoltaic panel is less than the voltage across the rechargeable energy source by a second pre-established amount; and

for inhibiting current flow through the load from the rechargeable energy source when the voltage across the photovoltaic panel is not less than the voltage across the rechargeable energy source by the second pre-established amount.

11. The circuit of claim 10 wherein the second pre-established amount is unequal to the third pre-established amount by a fourth pre-established amount.

12. A circuit comprising:

a photovoltaic panel;

a diode electrically connected to the photovoltaic panel;

a rechargeable battery electrically connected to the diode;

the photovoltaic panel, diode and battery operating such that current is inhibited from flowing from the battery to the photovoltaic panel and such that current is allowed to flow from the photovoltaic panel to the battery when the voltage across the photovoltaic panel is greater than the voltage across the battery by a first pre-established amount;

a lamp electrically connected to the rechargeable battery;

a first semiconductor electrically connected to the photovoltaic panel and to the rechargeable battery for generating a signal in response to the voltage across the photovoltaic panel and in response to the voltage across the battery;

a second semiconductor electrically connected to the lamp and to the first semiconductor for controlling current through the lamp in response to the signal generated by the first semiconductor;

the lamp, the first semiconductor and the second semiconductor operating such that current is allowed to flow through and activate the lamp only when the voltage across the photovoltaic is less than the voltage across the battery by a second pre-established amount; and

a resistor electrically connected to the first semiconductor and to the second semiconductor so as to cause the first semiconductor to receive only a fraction of the entire voltage across the photovoltaic panel after the lamp is activated.

13. The circuit of claim 12 wherein the first and second semiconductors are each transistor circuits.
