Abstract

A method for automatically selecting optimum frequencies for transmitting data from remote terminals upstream to a system manager is provided. The system manager initially selects a set of frequencies from a larger set of available frequencies and transmits a command downstream to each remote terminal indicating which frequencies to use. Each remote terminal transmits data messsages on each selected frequency in response to addressed commands generated by the system manager. The system manager receives and counts the data messages on each of the frequencies, and after a statistically significant number of messages are received, removes from use the frequency with the lowest number of data messages received. This frequency is replaced with either (1) a previously untried frequency, or if all frequencies have been tried, (2) a previously tried frequency with the highest number of data messages received. In a preferred embodiment, new frequencies are removed from use and added to use only when the number of data messages received and the received signal level on a particular frequency falls within certain predetermined ranges. In another embodiment, the transmission level for a particular frequency is recalibrated when the number of data message received and the received signal level falls within other predetermined ranges. In a further embodiment, two or more sets of optimum frequencies are automatically chosen for different times during the day and the system manager is able to immediately switch between these sets at the appropriate times.

Claims

1. In a bi-directional cable television system comprising a system manager for controlling a plurality of remote terminals over a cable television signal distribution system, a method for automatically selecting optimum frequencies for transmitting data from said remote terminals upstream to the system manager, the automatic frequency selection method comprising the steps of:

(a) selecting a first plurality of frequencies from a second larger plurality of frequencies,

(b) transmitting from each of said remote terminals data messages on each of said first plurality of frequencies in response to an addressed command generated by the system manager,

(c) receiving at said system manager said data messages on each of said first plurality of frequencies,

(d) counting the number of data messages received on each of said first plurality of frequencies,

(e) comparing said number of data messages counted on each of said first plurality of frequencies with one another, and

(f) removing from said first plurality of frequencies a frequency corresponding to the lowest said number of data messages counted on each of said first plurality of frequencies.

2. The automatic frequency selection method of claim 1, further comprising the step of:

(g) adding to said first plurality of frequencies a previously unselected frequency from said second plurality of frequencies.

3. The automatic frequencies selection method of claim 2, further comprising the step of:

(h) Repairing steps (b)-(g) until each of said second plurality of frequencies has been selected.

4. In a bi-directional cable television system comprising a system manager for controlling a plurality of remote terminals over a cable television signal distribution system, a method for automatically selecting optimum frequencies for transmitting data from said remote terminals upstream to the system manager, the automatic frequency selection method comprising the steps of:

(a) selecting a first plurality of frequencies from a second larger plurality of frequencies,

(b) transmitting from each of said remote terminals data messages on each of said first plurality of frequencies in response to an addressed command generated by the system manager,

(c) receiving at said system manager said data messages on each of said first plurality of frequencies,

(d) counting the number of data messages received on each of said first plurality of frequencies,

(e) comparing said number of data messages counted on each of said first plurality of frequencies with on another,

(f) removing from said first plurality of frequencies a frequency corresponding to the lowest said number of data messages counted on each of said first plurality of frequencies, and

(g) storing said number of data messages counted corresponding to said frequency removed from said first plurality of frequencies in step (f).

5. The automatic frequency selection method of claim 4, further comprising the step of:

(h) adding to said first plurality of frequencies a previously unselected frequency from said second plurality of frequencies.

6. The automatic frequency selection method of claim 5, further comprising the step of:

(i) repeating steps (b)-(h) until each of said second plurality of frequencies has been selected.

7. The automatic frequency selection method of claim 6, further comprising the steps of:

(j) comparing said stored number of data messages counted,

(k) adding to said first plurality of frequencies a frequency corresponding to the highest said stored number of data messages counted.

8. The automatic frequency selection method of claim 7, further comprising the step of:

(l) repeating steps (j)-(k) until each of said stored numbers has been compared.

9. In a bi-directional cable television system comprising a system manager for controlling a plurality of remote terminals over a cable television signal distribution system, an apparatus for automatically selecting optimum frequencies for transmitting data from said remote terminals upstream to the system manager, the automatic frequency selection apparatus comprising:

(a) a transmitter for transmitting from each of said remote terminals data messages on each of said first plurality of frequencies in response to an addressed command generated by the system manager,

(b) a receiver for receiving at said system manager said data messages on each of said first plurality of frequencies,

(c) means for counting the number of data messages received on each of said first plurality of frequencies,

(d) means for comparing said number of data messages counted on each of said first plurality of frequencies with one another, and

(e) frequency controller means for removing from said first plurality of frequencies a frequency corresponding to the lowest said number of data messages counted on each of said first plurality of frequencies.

10. The automatic frequency selection apparatus of claim 9, said frequency controller means further comprising:

(f) means for adding to said first plurality of frequencies a previously unselected frequency from said second plurality of frequencies.

11. In a bi-directional cable television system comprising a system manager for controlling a plurality of remote terminals over a cable television signal distribution system, an apparatus for automatically selecting optimum frequencies for transmitting data from said remote terminals upstream to the system manager, the automatic frequency selection apparatus comprising:

(a) a transmitter for transmitting from each of said remote terminals data messages on each of said first plurality of frequencies in response to an addressed command generated by the system manager,

(b) a receiver for receiving at said system manager said data messages on each of said first plurality of frequencies,

(c) means for counting the number of data messages received on each of said first plurality of frequencies,

(d) means for comparing said number of data messages counted on each of said first plurality of frequencies with one another,

(e) frequency controller means for removing from said first plurality of frequencies a frequency corresponding to the lowest said number of data messages counted on each of said first plurality of frequencies, and

(f) storage means for storing said number of data messages counted corresponding to said frequency removed from said first plurality of frequencies.

12. The automatic frequency selection apparatus of claim 11, wherein said frequency controller means further comprising:

(g) means for adding to said first plurality of frequencies a previously unselected frequency from said second plurality of frequencies.

13. The automatic frequency selection apparatus of claim 12, further comprising:

(h) means for comparing said stored number of data messages counted,

(i) means for adding to said first plurality of frequencies a frequency corresponding to the highest said stored number of data messages counted.

14. In a bi-directional cable television system comprising a system manager for controlling a plurality of remote terminals over a cable television signal distribution system wherein each remote terminal communicates with the system manager by transmitting a data signal having a transmission frequency and a transmission level, a method for automatically determining when a new transmission frequency or transmission level should be selected for one of said data signals to transmit data from said remote terminals upstream to the system manager, the automatic new frequency and transmission level determination method comprising the steps of:

(a) determining a bit error rate for a current transmission frequency of the data signal at the system manager,

(b) determining the received signal level for a current transmission level of the data signal at the system manager, and

(c) determining whether a new transmission frequency and a new transmission level should be selected based upon said determined bit error rate and said determined received level signal.

15. The automatic new frequency and transmission level determination method of claim 14, further comprising the step of:

(c) changing the current transmission frequency of the data signal to the new transmission frequency in response to a bit error rate above a first predetermined acceptable range and a received signal level above a second predetermined acceptable range.

16. The automatic new frequency and transmission level determination method of claim 14, further comprising the step of:

(c) changing the current transmission frequency of the data signal to the new transmission frequency in response to a bit error rate above a first predetermined acceptable range and a received signal level within a second predetermined acceptable range.

17. The automatic new frequency and transmission level determination method of claim 14, further comprising the step of:

(c) recalibrating the current transmission level of the data signal to the new transmission level in response to a bit error rate above a first predetermined acceptable range and a received signal level below a second predetermined acceptable range.

18. The automatic new frequency and transmission level determination method of claim 14, further comprising the step of:

(c) recalibrating the current transmission level of the data signal to the new transmission level in response to a bit error rate within a first predetermined acceptable range and a received signal level above a second predetermined acceptable range.

19. The automatic new frequency and transmission level determination method of claim 14, further comprising the step of:

(c) recalibrating the current transmission level of the data signal to the new transmission level in response to a bit error rate within a first predetermined acceptable range and a received signal level below a second predetermined acceptable range.

20. The automatic new frequency and transmission level determination method of claim 14, further comprising the step of:

(c) recalibrating the current transmission level of the data signal to the new transmission level in response to a bit error rate below a first predetermined acceptable range and a received signal level above a second predetermined acceptable range.

21. The automatic new frequency and transmission level determination method of claim 14, further comprising the step of:

(c) recalibrating the current transmission level of the data signal to the new transmission level in response to a bit error rate below a first predetermined acceptable range and a received signal level below a second predetermined acceptable range.

22. In a bit-directional cable television system comprising a system manager for controlling a plurality of remote terminals over a cable television signal distribution system, a method for selecting optimum frequencies for transmitting data from said remote terminals upstream to the system manager, the frequency selection method comprising the steps of:

(a) selecting a first plurality of optimum frequencies corresponding to a first time period from a larger plurality of frequencies,

(b) selecting a second plurality of optimum frequencies corresponding to a second time period from said larger plurality of frequencies.

(c) utilizing said first plurality of frequencies during said first time period,

(d) utilizing said second plurality of frequencies during said second timer period.

23. The frequency selection method of claim 22, wherein said first time period and said second time period correspond to time periods during a 24 hour period.

24. The frequency selection method of claim 22, wherein said first time period corresponds to a time period during daylight hours, and said second time period corresponds to a time period during night-time hours.
