1. In a bi-directional cable television system comprising a system manager for controlling a plurality of remote terminals over a cable television signal distribution system, a method for automatically selecting optimum frequencies for transmitting data from said remote terminals upstream to the system manager, the automatic frequency selection method comprising the steps of:

  • (a) selecting a first plurality of frequencies from a second larger plurality of frequencies,(b) transmitting from each of said remote terminals data messages on each of said first plurality of frequencies in response to an addressed command generated by the system manager,(c) receiving at said system manager said data messages on each of said first plurality of frequencies,(d) counting the number of data messages received on each of said first plurality of frequencies,(e) comparing said number of data messages counted on each of said first plurality of frequencies with one another, and(f) removing from said first plurality of frequencies a frequency corresponding to the lowest said number of data messages counted on each of said first plurality of frequencies.
