1. A system for selectively monitoring and recording a user'"'"'s ECG data and transmitting such data to an external receiving station, comprising:

  • a portable recording unit having a casing which encloses electronic elements, including processing means, a power source and a first memory, and which carries three conductive electrodes that are electrically coupled to the electronic elements, a first one of the electrodes being disposed on a first surface of the casing for contact with an ECG lead position on the user'"'"'s body and the other two electrodes being disposed on at least one other surface of the casing and positioned for ease of contact by the user with a thumb and finger, respectively, of a hand, whereby the unit monitors and processes the user'"'"'s ECG data and stores it in memory only when the first electrode contacts a body lead position and the second and third electrodes are grasped by the user; and

    a modem which is adapted for electrical connection to the recording unit, comprising circuit means for processing the ECG data into a format which can be transmitted for analysis to the external receiving station and means for transmitting the processed ECG data to the external receiving station.
