Abstract

An RF cellular TDM communication system employing offset frame synchronization between cells, any cell being omni-directional or directional, such that a frame at one cell is offset by an integral number of frames from another cell; the system incorporating multiplexed speech transcoding of traffic channels from multiple cells while supporting stringent delay requirements. Offset frame synchronization for providing rapid mobile assisted handoff.

Claims

1. In an RF communication system using TDM carries and a multiframe signalling structure, a method of organizing multiframe signalling structures among the TDM carries comprising:

providing a TDM frame of the multiframe signalling structure for at least a first carrier, providing a corresponding TDM frame of the multiframe signalling structure for at least a second carrier, and offsetting the TDM frames for the at least first carrier from that of the at least second carrier by a predetermined time.

2. The RF system of claim 1 wherein the at least first carrier and the at least second carrier serve different coverage areas.

25. The method as in claim 1 wherein the fixed predetermined time is an integral number of frames.

26. The method as in claim 1 further including the step of assigning the first and second carriers to service coverage areas.

3. In an RF cellular communication system using TDM carriers, having at least a first and second cell, each cell being assigned at least one TDM carrier, a method of organizing TDM frames among the TDM carriers comprising:

providing a TDM frame for the at least first cell'"'"'s carrier,

providing a corresponding TDM frame for the at least second cell'"'"'s carrier; and

offsetting the TDM frames for the at least first carrier from that of the at least second carrier by a predetermined time.

4. The cellular TDM communication system of claim 3 wherein the corresponding TDM frame, for the at least second cell'"'"'s carrier, comprises information whose content results from a substantially similar algorithmic operation also used to obtain information contained in the TDM frame for the at least first cell'"'"'s carrier.

5. The cellular TDM communication system of claim 3 wherein the predetermined time comprises an integral number of frames.

6. The cellular TDM communication system of claim 3 wherein the TDM frames comprise respective slots having information for a plurality of traffic channels.

7. The cellular TDM communication system of claim 3 wherein at least one of the cells is directional.

8. The cellular TDM communication system of claim 3 wherein at least one of the cells is omni-directional.

9. In an RF cellular syustem using TDM carriers, having at least a first and second cell, each cell being assigned at least one TDM carrier, and at least one subscriber unit communicating with the first cell, a method of organizing TDM frames among the TDM carriers comprising:

offsetting frame timing between the at least first and second cells by a predetermined time,

establishing, at the subscriber unit, the frame offset timing used by the second cell, and

transferring communication to the at least second cell based on the established frame timing thereby facilitating a rapid handoff.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein establishing the frame offset timing comprises receiving control channel information containing cell offset timing parameters from neighboring cells or sites.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein at least one of the cells is directional.

12. The method of claim 9 wherein at least one of the cells is omni-directional.

13. In an RF cellular communication system using TDM carriers, having at least a first carrier transmitted by a first cell and at least a second carrier transmitted by a second cell, wherein either of the cells may be omni-directional or directional, and wherein each carrier communicates at least one traffic channel on a slot basis, a method of organizing TDM frames among the TDM carriers comprising:

offsetting frame timing between the carriers, associated with each of the plurality of cells, by a predetermined time such that frame timing for the first cell is advanced to that of the second cell, and

multiplexing traffic channels for the first and second carriers into a same sequential transcoding means resulting in transcoded channels for each of the carriers,

transcoding the traffic channels on a first in-first out basis,

routing the transcoded channel associated with the first carrier to the first cell, and

routing the transcoded channel associated with the second carrier to the second cell thereby facilitating substantially continous transcoding of multiple traffic channels information streams.

In an RF cellular communication system using TDM carriers, having at least a first cell and at least one handoff cell, wherein either of the cells may be omni-directional or directional, each cell being assigned at least one TDM carrier, and at least one subscriber unit communicating with the first cell, a system apparatus for synchronization comprised of:

at least one base site controller including means for offsetting frame timing between the at least first cell and the at least one handoff cell by a predetermined time, and

the at least one subscriber unit having

(i) means for determining the offset frame timing difference between a frame received from the at least one handoff cell and that of the at least first cell,

(ii) means, operably coupled to means for determining, for establishing which particular slot information is expected in the frame received from the at least one handoff cell, and

(iii) means, operably coupled to means for determining, for transferring from the TDM carrier assigned to the at least first cell, to the carrier assigned to the handoff cell, without synchronizing to a specific frame number of the at least one handoff cell thereby facilitating a rapid handoff.

15. The cellular system of claim 14 wherein the predetermined time comprises an integral number of frames.

16. The cellular system of claim 14 wherein the subscriber unit further comprises means for prioritizing a search based upon the frame number received from each of a plurality of neighboring cells to minimize the time to acquire subsequent neighboring cell information.

In an RF cellular communication system using TDM carriers, having at least a first carrier transmitted by a first cell and at least a second carrier transmitted by a second cell, wherein either of the cells may be omni-directional or directional, and each carrier communicates at least one traffic channel on a slot basis, an apparatus comprising:

means for multiplexing the traffic channel streams for the first and second carriers for use in a processing means,

processing means, operably coupled to the means for multiplexing, for transcoding the traffic channel input streams on a first in first out basis,

means, operably coupled to the processing means, for coupling the transcoded channel associated with the first carrier to the first cell, and coupling the transcoded channel associated with the second carrier to the second cell, and

means, coupled to the means for coupling, for offsetting frame timing between the carriers, associated with each of the plurality of cells, by a predetermined time such that frame timing for the first cell is advanced with respect to that of the second cell

thereby facilitating substantially continuous transcoding of multiple traffic channel information streams.

18. A subscriber unit for use in an RF cellular TDM communication system having at least a first cell and handoff cell, wherein either of the cells may be omni-directional or directional, each cell being assigned at least one TDM carrier, the subscriber unit comprising:

means for determining an offset frame timing difference between a frame received from the at least one handoff cell and that of the at least first cell, and

means, operably coupled to means for determining, for establishing which particular slot information is expected in the frame received from the at least one handoff cell

means, operably coupled to means for determining, for transferring from the TDM carrier assigned to the at least first cell, to the carrier assigned to the handoff cell, without synchronizing to a specific frame number of the at least one handoff cell thereby facilitating a rapid handoff.

19. A subscriber unit for use in an RF cellular TDM communication system having at least a first and second cell, wherein either of the cells may be omni-directional or directional, each cell being assigned at least one TDM carrier, the subscriber unit comprising:

means for determining the offset timing difference between a frame received from the at least second cell and that of the at least first cell,

means, operably coupled to means for determining, for prioritizing a search based upon the offset timings received from a plurality of neighboring cells to minimize the time to acquire subsequent neighboring cell information.

In a TDM communication system having a plurality of base sites using substantially identical, multiframe signalling structures with a plurality of frame number dependent communication resources a method of increasing a signal processing rate of same frame number signals per multiframe such method comprising the steps of;

A) synchronizing the substantially similar, multiframe signaling structures of the plurality of base sites to a common reference; and

,

B) offsetting the frame number of the substantially similar, multiframe signaling structures by an offset number in adjacent cells of the system.

21. The method as in claim 20 further including the step of processing a plurality of same frame number traffic channel packets by a DSP located at a base site of the plurality of base sites for co-sited sectors based upon sector frame separation.

22. The method as in claim 20 further including the step of processing a plurality of same frame number BCCH signals from the plurality of base sites by a subscriber unit based upon sector frame separation.

23. In a TDM communication system having a plurality of base sites using substantially identical, multiframe signalling structures with a plurality of frame number dependent communication resources an apparatus for increasing a signal processing rate of same frame number signals per multiframe, such apparatus comprising;

A) means for synchronizing the substantially similar, multiframe signaling structures of the plurality of base sites to a common reference; and

,

B) means for offsetting the frame number of the substantially similar, multiframe signaling structures by an offset number in adjacent cells of the system.

24. The apparatus as in claim 23 further comprising means for processing a plurality of same frame number traffic channel packets by a DSP located at a base site of the plurality of base sites for co-sited sectors based upon sector frame separation.
