Abstract

An internal valve and metered positive displacement pump for a pressure fluid tank. The tank defines a fluid compartment, and first and second vessels are positioned within the protective envelope of the tank. A bellows pump assembly disposed in the first vessel includes a bellows and a piston cylinder arrangement positioned within and attached to the bellows. Pressurized fluid is pumped into and out of the first vessel to actuate the piston cylinder arrangement. With this actuating movement fluid is pumped from the compartment through a valve in the second vessel and into the second vessel for removal therefrom. The valve is normally closed against the working pressure of the fluid in the compartment by a spring bellows relief assembly in the second vessel. The force of the fluid pump by the piston cylinder arrangement opens the valve, and a check valve prevents fluid from flowing back from the valve into the first vessel. A passageway through the first vessel allows the pressurized fluid in the compartment to bear on the bellows and thereby bias the piston cylinder arrangement to an up (or down) position.

Claims

1. An internal valve system comprising:

a fluid containment vessel;

a compressible bellows assembly positioned in said fluid containment vessel;

a valve seat associated with said fluid containment vessel and through which fluid can flow relative to the interior of said fluid containment vessel;

a valve member movable relative to said valve seat between an open position wherein fluid can flow through said valve seat and a closed position wherein fluid is blocked from flowing through said valve seat; and

pressure transmitting means for transmitting fluid from said compressible bellows assembly to said valve member to thereby move said valve member to the open position.

2. The internal valve system of claim 1 further comprising altering means for altering the pressure in said compressible bellows assembly.

The internal valve system of claim 2 wherein said compressible bellows assembly, when the pressure therein is altered by said altering means, pumps fluid from said fluid containment vessel through said pressure transmitting means and out said valve seat with said valve member in the open position.

4. The internal valve system of claim 3 wherein said compressible bellows assembly continuously pumps fluid through said pressure transmitting means only when said altering means continuously alters the pressure in said compressible bellows assembly.

5. The internal valve system of claim 2 wherein said altering means is positioned outside of said fluid containment vessel.

6. The internal valve system of claim 2 wherein said compressible bellows assembly includes a pressure fluid fitting secured to said fluid containment vessel and through which fluid pressure passes from said altering means to said compressible bellows assembly.

7. The internal valve system of claim 6 wherein said fluid pressure comprises compressed gas.

8. The internal valve system of claim 6 wherein said fluid pressure comprises hydraulic fluid.

9. The internal valve system of claim 6 wherein said fluid pressure is applied to the outside of said compressible bellows assembly.

10. The internal valve system of claim 6 wherein said pressure fluid fitting is positioned substantially flush with the outside of said fluid containment vessel.

11. The internal valve system of claim 2 wherein said altering means directs fluid pressure against the outside of said compressible bellows assembly to thereby compress said compressible bellows assembly.

12. The internal valve system of claim 11 wherein said compressible bellows assembly prevents fluid within said compressible bellows assembly from leaking into said altering means.

13. The internal valve system of claim 1 wherein said compressible bellows assembly includes a pump mechanism and adjusting means for adjusting the stroke length of said pump mechanism.

14. The internal valve system of claim 13 wherein said adjusting means comprises an adjustment screw passing through said fluid containment vessel and adjustable from outside of said fluid containment vessel.

15. The internal valve system of claim 14 wherein said adjustment screw can be screwed flush with the outside of said fluid containment vessel to protect said adjustment screw from impact.

16. The internal valve system of claim 14 further comprising a safety cap securable to said fluid containment vessel over said adjustment screw.

17. The internal valve system of claim 13 wherein said compressible bellows assembly includes a sealing means for sealing said pump mechanism from said pressure transmitting means.

18. The internal valve system of claim 13 wherein said adjusting means can adjust the stroke length of said pump mechanism to seal said pump mechanism from said pressure transmitting means.

19. The internal valve system of claim 13 wherein said compressible bellows assembly includes a flexible wall secured to said pump mechanism.

20. The internal valve system of claim 19 wherein said pump mechanism is positioned inside said flexible wall.

21. The internal valve system of claim 1 wherein said compressible bellows assembly includes a pump mechanism and actuating means for actuating said pump mechanism.

22. The internal valve system of claim 1 wherein said compressible bellows assembly includes a pump mechanism and a flexible wall secured to said pump mechanism.

23. The internal valve system of claim 22 wherein said compressible bellows assembly includes a sleeve in which said pump mechanism and said flexible wall are positioned.

24. The internal valve system of claim 23 wherein said compressible bellows assembly includes a cavity defined between said flexible wall and said sleeve, and pressurizing means for pressurizing said cavity to thereby actuatably move said pump mechanism.

25. The internal valve system of claim 24 wherein said sleeve is secured directly to an inside wall surface of said fluid containment vessel.

26. The internal valve system of claim 24 wherein said compressible bellows assembly includes a fitting mounted in said fluid containment vessel and said pressurizing means includes a pressure source communicable with said pressure fitting.

27. The internal valve system of claim 26 wherein said fitting is positioned substantially flush with the outside of said fluid containment vessel.

28. The internal valve system of claim 24 wherein said pump mechanism includes a pump cylinder and a pump sleeve in which said pump cylinder slides, and said pump cylinder when said pump mechanism is actuated by said pressurizing means causes fluid in said pump sleeve to be forced into said pressure transmitting means out through said outlet and out through said valve seat.

29. The internal valve system of claim 23 wherein said compressible bellows assembly includes a flange attached to an inner end of said sleeve, and said flange defines a through-opening through which fluid in said fluid containment vessel can pass to an area defined by and within said flexible wall.

30. The internal valve system of claim 29 wherein said flange defines an outlet through which pressure generated by said pump mechanism can be transmitted to said pressure transmitting means.

31. The internal valve system of claim 29 wherein said compressible bellows assembly includes an inlet means through said flange to the interior of said flexible wall.

32. The internal valve system of claim 31 wherein said compressible bellows assembly includes check valve means for preventing the flow of fluid from inside of said flexible wall into said fluid containment vessel.

33. The internal valve system of claim 29 wherein said compressible bellows assembly includes a pump sleeve and an inlet means through said flange to the interior of said pump sleeve.

34. The internal valve system of claim 33 wherein said inlet means includes check valve means for preventing the flow of fluid from inside of said pump sleeve into said fluid containment vessel.

35. The internal valve system of claim 22 wherein said pump mechanism includes a pump cylinder and a pressure plate attached on top of said pump cylinder and to which said flexible wall is secured.

36. The internal valve system of claim 35 wherein said pump cylinder and said flexible wall define a cavity therebetween, and said compressible bellows assembly comprises a passageway means communicating fluid in said fluid containment vessel with said cavity.

37. The internal valve system of claim 22 wherein said compressible bellows assembly includes mechanical shut-off means for closing said pump mechanism against flow in either direction in said pressure transmitting means.

38. The internal valve system of claim 22 wherein said pump mechanism includes a pump cylinder and guiding means for guiding said pump cylinder relative to said fluid containment vessel.

39. The internal valve system of claim 22 wherein said pump mechanism is positioned inside said flexible wall.

40. The internal valve system of claim 22 wherein said pump cylinder and said flexible wall define a cavity therebetween, and said compressible bellows assembly comprises a passageway means for balancing fluid pressure in said fluid containment vessel with fluid pressure in said pressure transmitting means.

41. The internal valve system of claim 40 wherein said passageway means communicates fluid in said fluid containment vessel with said cavity.

42. The internal valve system of claim 1 wherein said compressible bellows assembly defines a bellows cavity, and said compressible bellows assembly includes a passageway means communicating fluid in said fluid containment vessel with said bellows cavity.

43. The internal valve system of claim 1 wherein said pressure transmitting means comprises a tubing communicating said compressible bellows assembly with said valve member.

44. The internal valve system of claim 43 wherein said tubing is positioned entirely within said fluid containment vessel.

45. The internal valve system of claim 43 wherein said pressure transmitting means further comprises check valve means for preventing the flow of fluid in said tubing to said compressible bellows assembly.

46. The internal valve system of claim 1 wherein said valve seat comprises a seat vessel connected to and positioned within said fluid containment vessel and a valve seat device positioned in said seat vessel.

47. The internal valve system of claim 46 wherein said seat vessel is positioned substantially flush with the outside of said fluid containment vessel.

48. The internal valve system of claim 46 wherein said valve member includes a spring-loaded relief assembly positioned within said seat vessel.

49. The internal valve system of claim 48 wherein said spring-loaded relief assembly is set at a pressure greater than the working pressure of said fluid containment vessel.

50. The internal valve system of claim 48 wherein said spring-loaded relief assembly is removable from said seat vessel for filling of said fluid containment vessel through said valve seat device.

51. The internal valve system of claim 48 wherein said valve member further comprises a removable retainer for said spring-loaded relief assembly.

52. The internal valve system of claim 46 wherein said fluid containment vessel includes a vessel opening communicating with the interior of said seat vessel.

53. The internal valve system of claim 52 further comprising a removable cap connectable to said fluid containment vessel at said vessel opening.

54. The internal valve system of claim 53 wherein said fluid containment vessel has a vessel outer wall, and said removable cap is positioned so that its outer surface is flush with said vessel outer wall.

55. The internal valve system of claim 1 wherein said compressible bellows assembly includes a pump cylinder arrangement and an assembly vessel in which said pump cylinder arrangement is positioned, said assembly vessel being positioned inside of said fluid containment vessel, said assembly vessel and said pump mechanism defining a cavity therebetween, said fluid containment vessel including a passageway through which fluid pressure can pass into said cavity.

56. The internal valve system of claim 1 wherein said compressible bellows assembly defines a cylinder area, and said compressible bellows assembly further comprises an inlet check valve which opens when said compressible bellows assembly is relaxed allowing fluid from said fluid containment vessel to flow into said cylinder area.

57. The internal valve system of claim 1 wherein said valve seat, valve member and pressure transmitting means are positioned in said fluid containment vessel.

58. The internal valve system of claim 1 wherein said valve seat, valve member and pressure transmitting means are positioned entirely within said fluid containment vessel.

59. The internal valve system of claim 1 wherein said valve member is positioned entirely within an envelope defined by said fluid containment vessel.

60. The internal valve system of claim 1 wherein said pressure transmitting means causes the transmitted fluid to directly impact said valve member and thereby lift said valve member off of said valve seat and to the open position.

61. The internal valve system of claim 1 wherein said fluid containment vessel is substantially full of vessel fluid, and the transmitted fluid of said pressure transmitting means comprises the vessel fluid.

62. An internal valve system comprising:

a fluid tank defining a fluid compartment;

a first vessel positioned in said fluid tank;

a bellows assembly positioned in said first vessel;

altering means for altering the pressure in said bellows assembly;

a second vessel positioned in said fluid tank, said second vessel including a valve seat through which fluid can pass relative to said fluid compartment;

a valve member positionable in said second vessel and movable relative to said valve seat between an open position wherein fluid can flow through said valve seat and a closed position wherein fluid is blocked from flowing through said valve seat; and

a pressure conduit through which fluid flows from said bellows assembly, as pressure therein is altered by said altering means, to said valve member to thereby move said valve member to the open position.

63. The internal valve system of claim 62 wherein said bellows assembly, when the pressure therein is altered by said altering means, pumps fluid from said fluid compartment through said pressure conduit, out said valve seat and into said second vessel.

64. The internal valve system of claim 63 wherein said bellows assembly prevents fluid within said bellows assembly from leaking into said altering means.

65. The internal valve system of claim 63 wherein said bellows assembly continuously pumps fluid through said pressure conduit only when said altering means continuously alters the pressure in said bellows assembly.

66. The internal valve system of claim 62 wherein said bellows assembly includes a pump cylinder mechanism having a cylinder area communicating with said pressure conduit.

67. The internal valve system of claim 66 wherein said bellows assembly includes an adjusting means for adjusting the stroke length of said pump cylinder mechanism.

68. The internal valve system of claim 67 wherein said adjusting means comprises an adjustment screw passing through said fluid tank and adjustable from outside said fluid tank.

69. The internal valve system of claim 66 wherein said bellows assembly includes a sealing means for sealing said pump cylinder mechanism from said pressure transmitting means.

70. The internal valve system of claim 66 wherein said bellows assembly includes an adjusting means for adjusting the stroke length of said pump cylinder mechanism, wherein said adjusting means can adjust the stroke length of said pump cylinder mechanism to seal said pump cylinder mechanism from said pressure conduit.

71. The internal valve system of claim 70 wherein said adjusting means comprises an adjustment screw passing through said fluid tank and adjustable from outside said fluid tank.

72. The internal valve system of claim 71 wherein said adjustment screw can be screwed flush with the outside of said fluid tank to protect said adjustment screw from impact.

73. The internal valve system of claim 62 wherein said valve member includes a plug and a spring-bellows relief assembly attached to said plug and positioned in said second vessel.

74. The internal valve system of claim 73 wherein said spring-bellows relief assembly is set to a pressure greater than the working pressure of said fluid compartment.

75. The internal valve system of claim 73 wherein said valve member further comprises a removable retainer for said spring-bellows relief assembly.

76. The internal valve system of claim 62 wherein said fluid tank defines a fluid tank opening communicating with said second vessel.

77. The internal valve system of claim 76 further comprising a flange cap removably securable to said fluid tank over said fluid tank opening.

78. The internal valve system of claim 62 wherein said first and second vessels are spaced from one another and have longitudinal axes thereof being disposed parallel to each other and perpendicularly through said fluid tank.

79. The internal valve system of claim 62 wherein said pressure conduit includes check valve means for stopping the flow of fluid from said second vessel to said first vessel.

80. The internal valve system of claim 62 wherein said first vessel includes a passageway through which fluid in said fluid compartment can flow to the interior of said bellows assembly.

81. The internal valve system of claim 62 wherein said fluid tank has a port therethrough and a fitting at said port, and said altering means comprises a pump positioned outside of said fluid tank and operatively connectable to said fitting.

82. The internal valve system of claim 81 wherein fluid pressure passes from said altering means through said fitting to said bellows assembly.

83. The internal valve system of claim 82 wherein said fluid pressure comprises compressed gas.

84. The internal valve system of claim 82 wherein said fluid pressure comprises hydraulic fluid.

85. The internal valve system of claim 82 wherein said fluid pressure is applied to the outside of said bellows assembly.

86. The internal valve system of claim 81 wherein said fitting is positioned substantially flush with the outside of said fluid tank.

87. The internal valve system of claim 62 wherein said altering means is disposed outside of said fluid tank.

88. The internal valve system of claim 62 wherein said pressure conduit is positioned in said fluid compartment.

89. The internal valve system of claim 62 wherein said pressure conduit is positioned entirely within said fluid compartment.

90. The internal valve system of claim 62 wherein said first vessel, bellows assembly, second vessel valve member and pressure conduit are positioned entirely within said fluid compartment.

91. The internal valve system of claim 62 wherein said second vessel is positioned substantially flush with the outside of said fluid tank.

92. The internal valve system of claim 62 wherein said bellows assembly includes a pump cylinder mechanism and a flexible wall secured to said pump cylinder mechanism.

93. The internal valve system of claim 92 wherein said pump cylinder mechanism is positioned inside said flexible wall.

94. The internal valve system of claim 93 wherein said pump cylinder mechanism and said flexible wall define a cavity therebetween, and said bellows assembly comprises a passageway means for balancing fluid pressure in said fluid compartment with fluid pressure in said pressure conduit.

95. The internal valve system of claim 94 wherein said passageway means communicates fluid in said fluid compartment with said cavity.
