Vehicle steering control system
First Claim
1. A steering control system for a vehicle, comprising:
- a steering wheel;
a steering mechanism for steering steerable wheels;
a first powered actuator for actuating said steering mechanism according to a steering input from said steering wheel;
a second powered actuator for applying a reaction force T to said steering wheel; and
sensor means for detecting an angular displacement of said steering wheel exceeding a certain limit in each direction;
said reaction force being sharply increased when said limit has been reached.

Abstract
In a "steer-by-wire" vehicle steering control system which steers steerable wheels with a powered actuator according to an input signal obtained from a sensor associated with a steering wheel, a secondary actuator is coupled to the steering wheel for the purpose of giving the operator of the vehicle a reaction force. The reaction force on the steering wheel is sharply increased or oscillated when a limit of the angular displacement of the steering wheel has been reached for the purpose of allowing the vehicle operator to know how far the steering wheel has been turned. The limit of the angular displacement of the steering wheel typically corresponds to the maximally steered condition of the steerable wheels.

6. A steer-by-wire steering control system for a vehicle, comprising:
-
a steering handle; steering means for steering steerable wheels, said steering means being operatively associated with said steering handle; means for applying a reaction force to said steering handle; sensor means for detecting an angular displacement of said steering handle exceeding a predetermined limit in each direction; and said reaction force applying means being adapted to apply a sharply increased reaction force to said steering handle when said steering limit has been reached. - View Dependent Claims (7, 8)
