1. Apparatus, comprising:
- metering means for measuring energy consumed by an end-user and supplied from a power distribution line of a power delivery system;
activatable analog to digital converter means for converting a scaled current to a digital value proportional to the magnitude of an input current signal from the power distribution line, said converter means being normally off; and
range select means for activating said converter means and for providing, to said converter means, the scaled current having a magnitude proportional to the magnitude of a current supplied to a meter means, said range select means comprising means for scaling, prior to conversion to a digital value, a current signal provided to the meter means by a first prescribed scale factor and initially deriving a first scaled current having a magnitude proportional to the magnitude of the current signal, means for comparing the magnitude of the first scaled current with a predetermined threshold to determine whether a second scaling operation on the current signal should occur, and means for activating said converter means subsequent to said comparing of the current signal.

Abstract
An electronic watthour meter is digitally configurable to operate as several different types of watthour meters for metering electrical energy from a variety of different electric utility services. Automatic scaling of line input currents is provided to scale the voltage input to an analog to digital converter over selected ranges such that low level and high level input signals are measured in an optimum range. A digital signal processor is employed to calculate values for metered electrical energy and output pulses, each proportional to a quantum of energy flowing in the circuit being metered. The processor calculates the value of DC offset errors inherent in the various analog circuits of the meter and uses that value in the calculation of metered electrical energy to compensate for such offset errors. The meter employs automatic and manually initiated test functions for testing the operation of the processor and other critical circuits in the meter.

6. A method of scaling current signals provided to meter means, said method comprising the steps of:

(a) providing activatable analog to digital converter means; (b) providing range select means for providing, to the analog to digital converter means, a scaled current having a magnitude proportional to the magnitude of the current signal provided to the meter means, said scaling comprising, prior to conversion of the current signal to a digital value, the steps of; (i) scaling the current signal by a first prescribed scale factor and initially deriving a scaled current having a magnitude proportional to the magnitude of the current signal, (ii) comparing the magnitude of the initially derived scale current with a predetermined threshold to determine if the current signal should be rescaled, and (iii) rescaling the magnitude of the current signal by a second prescribed scale factor by changing the magnitude of the initially derived scaled current by an amount prescribed by the second scale factor when there is a prescribed difference in the magnitudes of the initially derived scaled current and the predetermined threshold; and (c) activating the analog to digital converter means, subsequent to step (b), to convert the scaled current to a digital value proportional to the magnitude of the current signal. - View Dependent Claims (7, 8)

9. A method of scaling current signals provided to meter means, said method comprising the steps of:

(a) providing activatable analog to digital converter means; (b) providing range select means for providing, to said analog to digital converter means, a scaled current having a magnitude proportional to the magnitude of the current signal provided to the meter, said scaling comprising, prior to conversion of the current signal to a digital value, the steps of; (i) scaling the current signal by a first prescribed scale factor and initially deriving a scaled current having a magnitude proportional to the magnitude of the current signal, (ii) comparing, continuously, the magnitude of the initially derived scale current with a predetermined threshold to derive a range signal having first and second states, the range signal achieving the second state when there is a prescribed difference in the magnitudes of the initially derived scaled current and the predetermined threshold, (iii) sampling, periodically, the state of the range signal and, in response to the second state thereof, deriving a range select signal effective to rescale the current signal, (iv) rescaling the current signal by a second prescribed scale factor by changing the magnitude of the initially derived scaled current by an amount prescribed by the second scale factor when there is a prescribed difference in the magnitudes of the initially derived scaled current and the predetermined threshold; (c) activating the analog to digital converter means, subsequent to step (b), to convert the scaled current to a digital value proportional to the magnitude of the current signal, the conversion being completed prior to the next periodic sampling; and (d) repeating steps (b) (iii) through (c). - View Dependent Claims (10, 11)

12. Apparatus, comprising:

(a) gain control means, including switch means, for receiving an input current signal and providing, to current measurement means at an output thereof, a scaled current having a magnitude proportional to the magnitude of the input current signal, and being effective, in response to changes in the state between first and second states of a range select signal to selectively scale the magnitude of the input current signal up and down by first and second prescribed scale factors respectively by increasing and decreasing the magnitude of the scaled current and; (b) range select means, for providing the range select signal to said gain control means, including comparator means for comparing the scaled current to a predetermined threshold to effect changes in the state of the range select signal between first and second states dependent upon the magnitude of the scaled current, whereby said gain control means, in response to changes in the state of the range select signal, selectively changes in the magnitude of the scaled current at the output thereof to increase the scaled current when the magnitude of the scaled input current signal is less than the predetermined threshold and decrease the scaled current when the magnitude of the scaled input current signal is greater than the predetermined threshold to thus selectively scale the magnitude of the input current signal prior to being measured; and (c) activatable analog to digital converter means for converting the scaled current to a digital value proportional to the magnitude of the scaled input current signal, and wherein said range select means further includes means, in communication with said comparator means, responsive to a range signal provided thereto from said comparator means and further responsive to a sample signal periodically applied thereto, for periodically sampling the state of the range signal to effect a change in the state of the range select signal in accordance with the state of the range signal, the sampling being carried out prior to activation of said analog to digital converter. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14, 15)

16. Apparatus, comprising:

(a) gain control means, including switch means, for receiving an input current signal, and a gain controlled amplifier having an input terminal connected to an output of said switch means and an output terminal, for providing a scaled current having a magnitude proportional to the magnitude of the input current signal, said gain controlled amplifier having first and second current carrying resistors connected between the output terminal thereof and said switch means, said first and second resistors having a prescribed resistance ratio and being connected to summing points in said switch means and further being selectable to provide a current at the summing points thereof in response to changes between first and second states of a range select signal applied to said switch means, whereby the current flowing in the selected first and second resistors is summed with the input current signal to change the gain of said amplifier and thereby selectively scale the input current signal up and down by first and second scale factors respectively by increasing and decreasing the magnitude of the scaled current and; (b) range select means, for providing the range select signal to said switch means, including comparator means, connected to the output terminal of said amplifier, for comparing the scaled current to a predetermined threshold to effect changes in the state of the range select signal between first and second states dependent upon the magnitude of the scaled current, whereby said switch means, in response to changes in the state of the range select signal, selectively changes the gain of said amplifier to thereby change the magnitude of the scaled current at the output terminal thereof to increase the scaled current when the magnitude of the scaled input current signal is less than the predetermined threshold and to decrease the scaled current when the magnitude of the scaled input current signal is greater than the predetermined threshold to thus selectively scale the magnitude of the input current signal prior to being measured; (c) activatable analog to digital converter means for converting the scaled current to a digital value proportional to the magnitude of the scaled input current signal, and wherein said range select means further includes means, in communication with said comparator means, responsive to a range signal provided thereto from said comparator means and further responsive to a sample signal periodically applied thereto, for periodically sampling the state of the range signal to effect a change in the state of the range select signal in accordance with the state of the range signal, the sampling being carried out prior to activation of said analog to digital converter.
