1. An infusion pump for pumping fluid from a syringe by pushing the plunger of the syringe, the pump comprising:

  • clamping means for holding the syringe, the clamping means having locked and unlocked positions;

    locking means for locking and unlocking the clamping means;

    a syringe pusher means for pushing the plunger of the syringe;

    drive means for driving the syringe pusher means;

    engagement means for engaging and disengaging the drive means; and

    single control means for controlling both the locking means and the engagement means wherein the control means comprises means for causing the locking means to selectively lock and unlock the clamping means and for causing the engagement means to selectively engage and disengage the drive means.
