Abstract

An athletic shoe (20) includes a sole (22), an upper (25), and a tongue (26), as well as fasteners (28), such as shoelaces. Incorporated into the sole (22) of the athletic shoe (20) is a receptacle (30) for receiving and retaining a plug-in module (32) in a slide-in, releasably locking arrangement. The plug-in module (32) preferably includes a battery (62), a light emitting device (54), and electrical circuit elements (58, 60, 72) arranged to selectively connect the battery (62) to the light emitting device (54).

Claims

1. An athletic shoe comprising:

an upper;

a sole attached to said upper along an upper surface thereof, said sole including a recessed cavity formed in a side surface thereof;

a plug-in module removably retained in said cavity in said sole, the plug-in module containing illumination means, activated by pressure from a foot of a wearer during walking, for emitting light which is visible from said side surface of said sole, wherein said illumination means comprises power source means for supplying electrical energy, light emitting means, responsive to the electrical energy supplied from the power source means, for emitting visible light, and electrical circuit means for electrically interconnecting said power source means and said light emitting means, and wherein said plug-in module includes switch means for closing said electrical circuit means in response to pressure exerted by the foot of the wearer of the athletic shoe during walking; and

receptacle means, fixed in said cavity, for slidably receiving and releasably locking said plug-in module in said sole, wherein said plug-in module includes means, operable by the water, for disabling said switch means while wearing the athletic shoe by removing said plug-in module, inverting it, and re-inserting it in said cavity.

2. An athletic shoe comprising:

an upper;

a midsole attached to said upper along an upper surface thereof, said midsole including a recessed cavity formed in a side surface thereof;

a plug-in module slidably insertable into and removable from said cavity, said plug-in module containing light producing means for producing visible light, a battery, removably supported by the plug-in module, for supplying power to the light producing means, and a switch, integrally formed with the plug-in module for electrically connecting the light producing means to the battery in response to an applied pressure from a foot of a wearer during walking, and for disconnecting the light producing means from the battery upon removal of the applied pressure; and

receptacle means, disposed within said midsole adjacent said cavity, for slidably receiving and releasibly locking said plug-in module in said module, wherein said plug-in module comprises a pair of lateral side rails each having a slot formed on an interior surface thereof, the pair of lateral side rails being formed in spaced relation to one another, said battery being slidably received and removably supported by said slots formed in said rails;

a bottom plate integrally formed with said pair of lateral side rails; and

a light housing, integrally formed with said pair of lateral side rails and said bottom plate, for housing said light producing means, said light housing having an opening adjacent an area where said battery is slidably received and removably supported by said slots, wherein said switch is integrally formed with said light housing an is cantilevered with respect to said area.

An athletic shoe according to claim 2, wherein said switch means is movable relative to said battery when said battery is supported by said plug-in module, said light producing means comprises a light emitting diode having first and second electrical conductors connected thereto, the first electrical conductor extending through said opening and being in constant contact with said battery in said plug-in module, said second electrical conductor extending through said opening and being positioned adjacent said switch means and movable therewith with respect to said battery in response to the applied pressure to contact said battery.

An athletic shoe according to claim 3, wherein the plug-in module includes a first operating mode and a second operating mode, wherein in the first operating mode said switch responds to downward pressure exerted by the wearer in a heel region of said athletic shoe to enable said light emitting diode to produce said visible light, and in the second operating mode said plug-in module disables said switch.

5. A shoe according to claim 4, wherein in the first operating mode the plug-in module is inserted into the recessed cavity in a first position and in the second operating mode the plug-in module is inserted into the recessed cavity in a second position inverted with respect to the first position.
