Abstract

An absorbent feminine hygiene article has an external absorbent pad for disposition against the labia majora of a user, and a nonabsorbent flexible sheath for extending into the vagina. The sheath intercepts body fluid in the vagina and directs it to the external pad. A conducting layer conducts fluid so intercepted by the sheath to an absorbing surface on the interior of the external pad, the interior absorbing surface being displaced from the user'"'"'s body by a primary mass of an absorbent layer.

Claims

1. An absorbent feminine hygiene article, comprising:

(a) an absorbent external pad having

(i) a first layer of absorbent material adapted to receive and absorb body fluid, said first layer having first and second opposing major surfaces, and edges extending therebetween, said edges, in combination corresponding to an outer perimeter of said first layer; and

(ii) a second layer of baffle material effectively overlying said second major surface, said second layer being impervious to body fluid; and

(b) an intercepting element including a nonabsorbent, flexible sheath extending from said external pad, said sheath adapted to extend outwardly from said external pad a distance sufficient to permit insertion of at least a portion of said sheath into a user'"'"'s vagina when said external pad is placed against the user'"'"'s labia majora.

The absorbent feminine hygiene article of claim 1 wherein said external pad comprises an opening extending vertically through said first layer, said opening being disposed inwardly of said outer perimeter of said first layer, and having edges thereabout defining an inner perimeter about said opening, said sheath extending from said second layer and through said opening.

The absorbent feminine hygiene article of claim 2 wherein said nonabsorbent, flexible sheath is adapted to intercept body fluid inside a user'"'"'s body, and including a third conducting layer disposed between said first and second layers, and extending onto said sheath, said third layer being adapted to guide and conduct the body fluid from said sheath to said second major surface of said first layer, whereby the majority of the body fluid received by said first layer of said absorbent material is received through second major surface thereof.

4. The absorbent feminine hygiene article of claim 3 wherein said first layer has a first density at said second major surface, and said third layer has a second density, said second density being greater than said first density.

The absorbent feminine hygiene article of claim 3 including a fourth layer of cover material overlying said first major surface, said fourth layer having a second opening therein, effectively smaller than, and generally aligned with, said opening in said first layer, and said third layer having a third opening therein, effectively smaller than, and generally aligned with, said opening in said first layer, whereby said edges of said opening in said first layer are spaced from said sheath by said third and fourth layers.

6. The absorbent feminine hygiene article of claim 1 wherein said sheath is adapted to extend vertically beyond said external pad by a distance of about 10 mm. to about 70 mm.

The absorbent feminine hygiene article of claim 6 wherein said sheath is adapted to extend vertically beyond said external pad a distance sufficient that, when said sheath is fully extended in said user'"'"'s vagina, said sheath generally secures the positioning of said external pad, holding said pad substantially stationary, longitudinally and transversely, with respect to the vagina.

8. The absorbent feminine hygiene article of claim 1 wherein said second layer comprises a bond line there across.

9. The absorbent feminine hygiene article of claim 8 wherein said sheath is an extension of said second layer and comprises said bond line.

10. An absorbent feminine hygiene article comprising:

a) an external pad having an absorbent layer with first and second opposing major surfaces, said absorbent layer adapted to receive and absorb body fluid;

a liquid-permeable cover positioned adjacent to said first major surface of said absorbent layer; and

a liquid-impermeable baffle positioned adjacent to said second major surface of said absorbent layer; and

b) a nonabsorbent, flexible sheath extending outwardly from said external pad a distance sufficient to permit insertion of at least a portion of said sheath into a user'"'"'s vagina when said external pad is placed against the user'"'"'s labia majora, said external pad having conducting means for routing body fluid from said sheath to said second major surface of said absorbent layer and for receipt of said body fluid into said first absorbent layer through said second major surface, said conducting means extending from said cover to an interior portion of said pad.

11. The absorbent feminine hygiene article of claim 10 wherein said conducting means is a layer of fluid conducting material disposed between said baffle and said absorbent layer and having a portion which extends upward to said cover.

12. The absorbent feminine hygiene article of claim 10 wherein said absorbent layer has a first density at said second major surface and said conducting means includes a conducting layer having a second density, said second density being greater than said first density.

13. The absorbent feminine hygiene article of claim 10 wherein said sheath is adapted to extend vertically beyond said external pad by a distance of about 10 mm. to about 70 mm.

The absorbent feminine hygiene, article of claim 13 wherein said sheath is adapted to extend outwardly beyond said absorbent layer a distance sufficient that, when said sheath is fully extended in the user'"'"'s vagina, said sheath generally secures the positioning of said external pad, holding said pad substantially stationary, longitudinally and transversely, with respect to the vagina.

15. The absorbent feminine hygiene article of claim 10 wherein said baffle comprises a bond line there across, the substantially equivalent components of said baffle on opposing sides of said bond line.

16. An absorbent feminine hygiene article having a cover adapted to be disposed against a user'"'"'s body, said absorbent feminine hygiene article comprising:

a) an external pad having

(a) an absorbent layer with first and second opposing major surfaces, said first major surface positioned adjacent to said cover, said first layer being adapted to receive and absorb body fluid;

(b) a liquid-impermeable baffle overlying said second major surface of said absorbent layer;

(c) an intercepting means for intercepting body fluid inside a user'"'"'s vagina and directing said body fluid to said external pad, said intercepting means including a nonabsorbent, flexible sheath adapted to extend outwardly from said external pad a distance sufficient to permit insertion of at least a portion of said sheath into the use'"'"'s vagina when said external pad is placed against the user'"'"'s labia majora; and

(d) conducting means for routing said body fluid from said intercepting means to said second major surface for receipt of said fluid into said first layer of absorbent material through said second major surface, said conducting means extending from said cover to the interior of said pad.

17. The absorbent feminine hygiene article of claim 16 wherein said conducting means comprises a third layer of fluid conducting material partially disposed between said baffle and said absorbent layer and extending to said cover whereby said conducting means receives body fluid from said cover and conducts said body fluid to said second major surface of said absorbent layer.

18. The absorbent feminine hygiene article of claim 16, said first layer having a first density, said conducting means comprising a conducting layer having a second density, said second density being greater than said first density.

19. The absorbent article of claim 16 wherein said cover, absorbent, and conducting means having a first, second, and third opening, respectively, said openings generally in vertical alignment with said sheath.

20. The absorbent article of claim 19 wherein said sheath extends vertically from said baffle.

21. The absorbent article of claim 20 wherein said conducting means is in liquid communication with said sheath and said means is partially disposed between said sheath and said cover.

22. The absorbent article of claim 20 wherein said sheath extends a distance from said external pad of from about 10 mm to about 70 mm.
