1. A tachometer for monitoring rotation of a machine shaft projecting from a housing having a standard NEMA end plate secured to the housing via a plurality of fasteners extending through aligned mounting holes in the end plate and the housing, the tachometer comprising:

  • a member adapted for attachment to the machine shaft externally of the housing and in proximity to the end plate of the housing, the member having at least one pattern applied thereon;

    at least one sensor module including at least one sensing element for sensing rotation of said machine shaft via said at least one pattern and for providing responsive first and second electrical timing signals in quadrature, said sensor module including a mounting flange; and

    an enclosure including means for fastening said enclosure to the end plate of the housing using the aligned mounting holes in the end plate and the housing, said enclosure adapted to surround and enclose said member and at least partially enclose said shaft, said enclosure having a first machined external surface surrounding a first radial opening for engaging said mounting flange of said sensor module such that said sensor module projects through said radial opening and into said enclosure and wherein said member, said sensor module, and said enclosure including said machined external surface are sized and arranged so that upon assembly of said tachometer to said housing and without further adjustment, said at least one sensing element is accurately self-aligned axially and radially relative to said at least one pattern, with a predetermined radial gap between said sensing element and said at least one pattern.
