An upright vacuum cleaner, comprising a floor engaging unit, said floor engaging unit being supported above a floor by a plurality of floor engaging wheels and having a rotary brush mounted thereto, a height adjustment means being associated with at least some of said wheels to adjust the portion of said brush relative to said floor, wherein said floor engaging unit has a two-part construction comprising a base and a hood, said base and hood cooperating to define a chamber in which the rotary brush is received and said hood including a first resilient mounting arm, said mounting arm extending into an aperture provided by the base to releasably attach the hood thereto, said hood being removable from the base to provide access to the rotary brush.
