1. A suture throw holder and rundown system for running at least one suture throw down loose ends of suture extending from a surgical site, the system comprising:
- support means for releasably supporting adjacent a surgical site at least one throw formed using two ends of suture extending from said surgical site, wherein said support means comprises a frame and a plurality of pegs attached to said frame in at least one group so that each of said at least one suture throw formed using said two ends of suture may be releasably supported by a corresponding respective one of said at least one group of pegs; and
rundown means for transferring said at least one throw from said support means and running said at least one throw down said two ends of suture to said surgical site.

Abstract
A suture throw holder and rundown system for running one or more throws formed in two lengths of suture extending from a surgical site down to the surgical site so as to form a knot at the surgical site. The system comprises a support mechanism for releasably supporting a plurality of throws in a predetermined arrangement adjacent a surgical site and a tool for removing throws from the support mechanism and running the throws down the lengths of suture to the surgical site.

8. A suture throw holder and rundown system for running at least one suture throw down loose ends of suture extending from a surgical site, the system comprising:

support means for releasably supporting adjacent a surgical site at least one throw formed using two ends of suture extending from said surgical site; and rundown means for transferring said at least one throw from said support means and running said at least one throw down said two ends of suture to said surgical site wherein said rundown means comprises an elongate shaft having a front end, said front end including a first groove sized to receive said at least one throw, wherein said first groove has a V-shaped configuration and includes a base portion positioned to intersect the central axis of the shaft, and wherein said shaft comprises second and third elongate grooves positioned (a) so that the elongate axes of said first and second grooves extend parallel to the elongate axis of said shaft, (b) in diametric opposition to one another, and (c) so as to intersect said base of said first groove. - View Dependent Claims (9)

support mans for releasably supporting adjacent a surgical site at least one throw formed using two ends of suture extending from said surgical site, wherein said support means comprises an elongate block of material having a top surface and a plurality of passageways provided therein which communicate with said top surface, said passageways being configured so as to define at least one pair of protrusions which are arranged so that each of said at least one throw formed using said two ends of suture may be releasably supported by a corresponding respective one of said at least one pair of protrusions; and rundown means for transferring said at least one throw from said support means and running said at least one throw down said two ends of suture to said surgical site.

15. A device for releasably supporting adjacent a surgical site at least one throw formed using loose ends of suture extending from a surgical site, said device comprising:

frame means for releasably supporting adjacent a surgical site at least one throw formed using two ends of suture extending from said surgical site, wherein said frame means comprises a leading edge and a plurality of protrusions arranged in at least one group so that each of said at least one throw formed using two ends of suture may be releasably supported by a corresponding respective one of said at least one group of protrusions, each of said at least one group of protrusions comprising a first pair of protrusions which lie on a leading plane and a second pair of protrusions which lie on a trailing plane, wherein said leading plane is closer to said leading edge of said frame means than said trailing plane, and further wherein the protrusions of said first pair are positioned farther apart than the protrusions of said second pair; and leg means attached to said frame means for supporting said frame means in a predetermined orientation relative to said surgical site. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17, 18)

19. A method of running throws formed using two loose ends of suture extending from a tissue surface in a surgical site down the loose ends of suture to the tissue surface, the method comprising the following steps:
-
(a) providing a suture throw holder and rundown device comprising; (i) support means comprising a frame having a leading edge, a trailing edge, a clamp attached to said trailing edge, and a plurality of protrusions attached to said frame in adjacent groups, each of said groups of protrusions comprising a first pair of protrusions which lie on a leading plane and a second pair of protrusions which lie on a trailing plane, wherein said leading plane is closer to said leading edge of said frame than said trailing plane, and further wherein the protrusions of said first pair are positioned farther apart than the protrusions of said second pair and each of said plurality of protrusions comprises an inner surface and an outer surface; (ii) leg means attached to said frame for supporting said frame in a predetermined orientation relative to said surgical site; (iii) an elongate shaft having a front end, said front end including a first groove sized to receive a throw formed using two loose ends of suture extending from a surgical site, said first groove having a bottom portion; (b) positioning said support means adjacent an opening in tissue leading to a surgical site so that said leading edge of said support means is positioned adjacent said opening, wherein said surgical site comprises a tissue surface and two lengths of suture extend through said tissue surface and away from said surgical site; (c) tying a throw in said two lengths of suture and releasably attaching said throw to a first one of said groups of protrusions, which first one of said groups is positioned closest to said leading edge of said support means, so that the portions of said lengths of suture extending from surgical site to said throw is wrapped around said first pair of protrusions so as to engage said outer surfaces thereof and so that portions of said lengths of suture extending away from said throw toward a second one of said groups of protrusions are wrapped around said second pair of protrusions so as to engage said inner surfaces thereof; (d) tensioning the ends of said lengths of suture extending away from said throw toward said second one of said groups of protrusions; (e) pulling said support means away from said opening so as to substantially eliminate any slack in those portions of said lengths of suture extending between said tissue surface in said surgical site and said first pair of protrusions around which said lengths of suture are wrapped; (f) manipulating said support means so as to disengage said lengths of suture from said first pair of protrusions; (g) manipulating said shaft so that said throw is received in, and engages the bottom portion of, said first groove; (h) urging said shaft toward said tissue surface, while maintaining engagement of said throw with said bottom portion of said first groove, so as to cause said throw to run down said lengths of suture until said throw is positioned adjacent said tissue surface. - View Dependent Claims (20, 21, 22)

23. A device for releasably supporting adjacent a surgical site at least one throw formed using loose ends of suture extending from said surgical site, the device comprising:

support means for releasably supporting adjacent a surgical site at least one throw formed using two ends of suture extending from said surgical site so as to facilitate the individual transfer of discrete ones of said at least one throw to a separate tool; and handle means coupled with said support means for positioning and manipulating said support means relative to said surgical site; wherein said support means comprises first and second fingers attached to said handle means so as to be spaced a predetermined distance from one another and wherein said first finger comprises at least one first peg which projects outwardly from said first finger, and said second finger comprises at least one second peg which projects outwardly from said second finger.

24. A method of running throws formed using two loose ends of suture extending from a tissue surface in a surgical site down the loose ends of suture to the tissue surface, the method comprising the following steps:

(a) providing a suture throw holder and rundown device comprising; (i) support means comprising a frame having a leading edge, a trailing edge and a plurality of protrusions attached to said frame in at least one group, each of said at least one group of protrusions comprising a first pair of protrusions which lie on a leading plane and a second pair of protrusions which lie on a trailing plane, wherein said leading plane is closer to said leading edge of said frame than said trailing plane, and further wherein the protrusions of said first pair are positioned farther apart than the protrusions of said second pair and each of said protrusions comprises an inner surface and an outer surface; and (ii) an elongate shaft having a front end, said front end including a first groove sized to receive a throw formed using two loose ends of suture extending from a surgical site, said first groove having a bottom portion; (b) positioning said support means adjacent an opening in tissue leading to a surgical site so that said leading edge of said support means is positioned adjacent said opening, wherein said surgical site comprises a tissue surface and two lengths of suture extend through said tissue surface and away from said surgical site; (c) tying a throw in said two lengths of suture and releasably attaching said throw to a first one of said at least one group of protrusions, which first one of said at least one group is positioned closest to said leading edge of said support means, so that the portions of said lengths of suture extending from surgical site to said throw are wrapped around said first pair of protrusions so as to engage said outer surfaces thereof and so that portions of said lengths of suture extending away from said throw toward said trailing edge of said frame are wrapped around said second pair of protrusions so as to engage the inner surface thereof; (d) tensioning the ends of said portions of said lengths of suture extending away from said throw toward said trailing edge of said frame; (e) pulling said support means away from said opening so as to substantially eliminate any slack in those portions of said lengths of suture extending between said tissue surface in said surgical site and said first pair of protrusions around which said lengths of suture are wrapped; (f) manipulating said support means so as to disengage said lengths of suture from said first pair of protrusions; (g) manipulating said shaft so that said throw is received in, and engages the bottom portion of, said first groove; and (h) urging said shaft toward said tissue surface, while maintaining engagement of said throw with said bottom portion of said first groove, so as to cause said throw to run down said lengths of suture until said throw is positioned adjacent said tissue surface. - View Dependent Claims (25, 26)
