Abstract

A brake cooling system for applying a pre-cooling bath to the brake packs of a vehicle through a brake coolant valve having an actuating piston chamber. The brake cooling system is responsive not only to the application of operating pressure to the brake pedal but also to release of the throttle. To operate the brake cooling system in response to the throttle setting, the brake cooling system utilizes a cut-off valve having a transfer chamber. A signal feed conduit communicates between the transfer chamber and the actuating piston chamber in the brake coolant valve. A computerized control member provides pressurized control fluid to the actuating chamber of a modulator control valve. The pressure of the control fluid is established in response to the throttle setting. A hydraulic timer is provided to interrupt the entry of the signal pressure into the transfer chamber after a predetermined period of time. The aforesaid cooling system is also cooperatively compatible with a customary brake apply valve that provides coolant to the brake packs in response to actuation of the brake pedal.

Claims

1. A brake cooling system for applying a pre-cooling bath to brake packs of a vehicle in response to an engine throttle setting, the pre-cooling bath being delivered prior to a brake engagement signal through a brake coolant valve having an actuating piston chamber, said system comprising:

a cut-off valve having a transfer chamber;

conduit means communicating between said transfer chamber and the actuating piston chamber in the brake coolant valve;

a modulator valve for providing a signal pressure to said transfer chamber in response to a reduction in the engine throttle setting; and

,

means to interrupt the entry of said signal pressure into said transfer chamber after a predetermined period of time following the reduction of the engine throttle setting.

2. A brake cooling system, as set forth in claim 1, wherein said modulator valve further comprises:

a modulator spool valve member received for axial translation between a first and a second position;

said modulator spool member having axially spaced first and second lands which define a directing chamber therebetween.

3. A brake cooling system, as set forth in claim 2, wherein said means to interrupt the entry of said signal pressure into said transfer chamber further comprises:

a timer valve responsive to the signal pressure provided from said modulator valve.

4. A brake cooling system, as set forth in claim 3, wherein said timer valve further comprises:

piston means;

an accumulating chamber associated with said piston means such that said piston will translate in response to the signal pressure within said accumulating chamber to actuate said cut-off valve;

means to communicate the signal pressure within said directing chamber to said accumulating chamber; and

,

means incorporated within said communicating means between said directing chamber and said accumulating chamber to delay the transfer of pressure from said directing chamber to said accumulating chamber.

5. A brake cooling system, as set forth in claim 4, wherein:

means biasingly to oppose translation of said piston means in response to the pressure within said accumulating chamber.

6. A brake cooling system, as set forth in claim 5, wherein:

a unidirectional bypass is incorporated within said communicating means to effect flow between said accumulating chamber and said directing chamber;

said unidirectional bypass is connected in parallel with said means to delay the transfer of pressure from said directing chamber to said accumulating chamber.

7. A brake cooling system, as set forth in claim 6, wherein said means to delay the transfer of pressure from said modulator valve to said accumulating chamber comprises:

a restricting orifice.

8. A brake cooling system, as set forth in claim 2, further comprising:

a cut-off spool valve member having axially spaced first and second lands;

said cut-off spool valve member being axially translatable between a first and a second position;

the transfer chamber defined between said axially spaced first and second lands of said cut-off spool valve member;

a transfer conduit continuously communicating between said directing chamber and said transfer chamber;

a source of pressurized hydraulic fluid;

a hydraulic return system;

said directing chamber communicating with said hydraulic return system when said modulator spool valve member is in said first position;

said directing chamber communicating with said source of pressurized hydraulic fluid when said modulator spool valve member is in said second position; and

,

said transfer conduit means communicating between said transfer chamber and said hydraulic return system, through said modulator valve, when said modulator spool valve member is in said first position.

9. A brake cooling system, as set forth in claim 8, further comprising:

means to bias said modulator valve member toward said first position;

an actuating chamber;

a control member to supply fluid to said actuating chamber;

said fluid supplied to said actuating chamber by said control member being pressurized in response to the engine throttle setting;

said modulator spool valve member being movable to said second position when the force applied by the pressurized fluid in said actuating chamber exceeds the force supplied by said biasing means.

10. A brake cooling system, as set forth in claim 9, wherein:

said axially spaced lands defining said directing chamber present a differential projected area to said directing chamber.

11. A brake cooling system, a set forth in claim 1, wherein said modulator valve further comprises:

a modulator spool valve member having axially spaced first and second lands;

said modulator spool valve member being axially translatable between a first and a second position;

a directing chamber defined between said axially spaced first and second lands on said modulator spool valve member;

a transfer conduit continuously communicating between said directing chamber and said transfer chamber;

a source of pressurized hydraulic fluid;

a hydraulic return system;

said directing chamber communicating with said hydraulic return system when said modulator spool valve member is in said first position;

said directing chamber communicating with said source of pressurized hydraulic fluid when said modulator spool valve member is in said second position.

12. A brake cooling system, as set forth in claim 11, wherein said modulator valve further comprises:

means to bias said modulator valve spool member toward said first position;

an actuating chamber;

a control member to supply fluid to said actuating chamber;

said fluid supplied to said actuating chamber by said control member being pressurized in response to the engine throttle setting;

said modulator spool valve member being movable to said second position when the force applied by the pressurized fluid in said actuating chamber exceeds the force supplied by said biasing means.

13. A brake cooling system, as set forth in claim 12, wherein:

said axially spaced lands defining said directing chamber present a different projected area to said directing chamber.

14. A brake cooling system, as set forth in claim 2, wherein:

said axially spaced lands defining said directing chamber presents a differential projected area to said directing chamber.

15. A brake cooling system for applying a pre-cooling bath to brake packs of a vehicle in response to an engine throttle setting, said system comprising:

means for providing pressurized fluid;

a brake coolant valve having a piston chamber;

a brake apply valve having a brake apply signal chamber and a brake apply chamber;

brake pedal means;

conduit means communicating between said brake apply signal chamber and said piston chamber in said brake coolant valve in response to the actuation of said brake pedal means;

engine throttle pedal means to permit selectively increasing and reducing the engine throttle setting;

a modulator valve having a valve member that defines a directing chamber and is movable between first and second positions;

means biasing said modulator valve member to said first position;

a valve actuating chamber for receiving pressurized fluid;

the pressurized fluid received in said valve actuating chamber acting against said modulator valve member in opposition to said biasing means;

a control member for supplying fluid to the valve actuating chamber in said modulator valve that is pressurized to a degree that reflects the engine throttle setting;

a cut-off valve having a transfer chamber;

conduit means communicating between said transfer chamber and said piston chamber in the brake coolant valve;

said modulator valve providing a signal pressure to said transfer chamber in response to said engine throttle setting; and

,

means to interrupt the entry of said signal pressure into said transfer chamber after a predetermined period of time following a predetermined reduction of the engine throttle setting.

16. A brake cooling system, as set forth in claim 15, further comprising:

a shuttle valve;

said conduit means communicating between said brake apply signal chamber and said piston chamber in said brake coolant valve in response to the actuation of said brake pedal means and said conduit means communicating between said transfer chamber and said piston chamber in the brake coolant valve both through said shuttle valve.
