1. A device for controlled diffusion of a chemical substance of interest between a body fluid and said device, said device comprising:

  • a structure impermeable to the substance of interest, an inwardly facing surface of which surrounds and in part defines a compartment, said structure having a port defined therein; and

    a diffusion layer formed in said structure characterized by selective permeability to the substance of interest while being substantially impermeable to other substances and the substance of interest bound to any of said other substances, said layer comprising at the time of formation in said compartment a dispersed solution coating substantially all of said inwardly facing surface of said structure thereby establishing said layer in adherence with said inwardly facing surface and across said port.
