Abstract

A method and device which is used to insert an implant in order for treating an eye with glaucoma in order to lower the intraocular pressure of the eye. The implant is an artificial meshwork. The implant is attached to a guide knife which is inserted into the anterior chamber of the eye. The knife is then removed leaving the implant in place. During the operation, a prismatic lens with c-shaped vacuum ring is used to help assist the surgeon in viewing the anterior chamber of the eye and stabilizing the eye.

Claims

1. A method of treating the eye for glaucoma comprising the steps of:

a) providing a cutting tool having a blade, a handle and a carrying portion;

b) mounting a filtering member to the carrying portion;

c) inserting the cutting tool with the filtering member mounted thereto through a cornea of an eye of a patient and partially into the anterior chamber of the eye by causing the cornea with said blade; and

d) withdrawing the cutting tool from the resulting incision while disengaging the filtering member from the cutting tool, whereby the filtering member is retained in the incision.

2. A method as claimed in claim 1, further comprising, before the step of inserting, preparing the eye, including the further steps of:

attaching a prismatic contact lens with a C-shaped vacuum ring to an outer surface of the eye;

activating a vacuum pump which is operatively coupled to the prismatic contact lens; and

stabilizing the eye and locating a point of insertion of the filtering member.

3. A method as claimed in claim 2, wherein the prismatic contact lens comprises:

a reflective surface;

a gonioprism which has a concave edge with substantially the same curvature as the cornea of the eye, a convex edge for magnifying an image, and a flat edge attached to the reflective surface;

a said c-shaped vacuum ring having an open side portion attached to a back side of the reflective surface, and an open bottom portion flush with the concave edge of the gonioprism and a hole on a top portion; and

a hollow tube which has a first end attached to the hole on the top portion of the C-shaped vacuum ring.

4. A method as claimed in claim 3, wherein a second end of the hollow tube is attached to said vacuum pump.

5. A method as claimed in claim 4, wherein the vacuum pump is activated by a floor-switch.

6. A method as claimed in claim 4, wherein the vacuum pump has a regulator which controls pressure from 0 to 700 mmHg.

7. A method as claimed in claim 4, wherein the vacuum pump has a solenoid valve for fast release to atmosphere.

8. A method as claimed in claim 3, wherein the C-shaped vacuum ring is made of a pliable material.

9. A method as claimed in claim 3, wherein the gonioprism is made of a transparent material selected from the group consisting of plastic, crystal, and glass.

10. A method as claimed in claim 3, wherein the reflective surface is a mirror.

11. A method as claimed in claim 1, further comprising, before the step of mounting, forming the filtering member, including the steps of:

cutting a polymer film to a desired size;

folding the polymer film so that a front portion is folded over a back portion thereof;

welding side edges of the front portion to respective side edges of the back portion so as to define a pocket configuration.

12. A method as claimed in claim 11, wherein the back portion is longer than the front portion.

13. A method as claimed in claim 11, wherein the polymer film is a hydrophobic porous polymer material.
