Establishing telecommunications calls in a broadband network
First Claim
1. A method of establishing circuit switched calls in a network, comprising the steps of:
- provisioning a multiplicity of synchronous, constant bit rate (CBR), packetized virtual circuits (PVCs) among nodes of the network, each packet of each PVC being a composite packet for carrying signals for a plurality of calls over a plurality of channels of said each PVC, said signals receivable from one or more pulse code modulated (PCM) signal streams terminating in one of said nodes, each call occupying one channel of said CBR PVC;
responsive to a request to establish a circuit switched connection from an ingress node to an egress node of said network for a call on one of said signal streams, making a first determination of whether any active PVC between said ingress node and said egress node has an available channel for carrying said call; and
responsive to a positive first determination, establishing a connection for said call using a PVC having said available channel;
thereafter, extracting signals for said call from said one of said signal streams and inserting said extracted signals into CBR packets of said PVC having said available channel.

Abstract
In accordance with the principles of this invention, Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) signal streams are converted into Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) cells for switching and transmission across a telecommunications network. Each cell carries one PCM sample of up to 48 different voice connections, the voice connections selected from the PCM data streams because they have a common destination. The cells are transmitted over ATM virtual circuits, each circuit transmitting one cell every 125 μs. Advantageously, ATM transmission systems interface with PCM systems without adding appreciable delay and without requiring additional buffering. Advantageously, new voice paths can be established most of the time by using available slots in the cells of existing virtual paths. This application relates to methods of establishing connections in accordance with the principles of the invention.

14. A method of establishing a call connection through a telecommunications network, comprising:
-
provisioning a constant bit rate (CBR) packetized permanent virtual circuit (PVC) between an ingress node of the network and an egress node of the network; and responsive to receiving a request to establish a communication channel between said ingress node and said egress node, assigning a call to an available byte position of each packet of said CBR PVC; thereafter, extracting signals from a communication channel and inserting said extracted signals into said assigned byte position of said CBR PVC; wherein each byte position of a payload of each packet transmitted over communication channels carrying signals from a plurality of pulse code modulated (PCM) signal streams.
