Abstract

A two stage interpolation system provides greater bandwidth for signals compressed and expanded by interpolation, for example video signals displayed in a zoom or enlarged mode. A finite impulse response filter generates from a first signal of digital samples a second signal of digital samples representing signal points between the samples of the first signal. The first signal is delayed, but otherwise substantially unmodified. The second signal and the delayed first signal are interleaved, for example by a multiplexer, to produce a third signal of digital values having a sample density twice that of the first signal. A compensated variable interpolator derives from the third signal a fourth signal of digital samples in which the frequency content of information represented by the first signal has been changed. The first signal can have frequency components as high as approximately 40% of the sampling rate for the first signal without significant reduction of bandwidth in the fourth signal, even when expanded. In the case of enlarging the picture represented by a video signal, the video signal can be truncated, for example in a FIFO line memory, prior to being delayed and processed by the finite impulse response filter. The compensated variable interpolator can be controlled, for example by a microprocessor or hardware equivalent, to provide selected ratios of compression or expansion.

Claims

1. An interpolation system, comprising:

a finite impulse response filter for generating from a first signal of digital samples a second signal of digital samples representing signal points between said samples of said first signal, said first signal representing information having a frequency content;

means for delaying said first signal;

means for interleaving said second signal and said delayed first signal to produce a third signal of digital values having a sample density twice that of said first signal; and

,

a compensated variable interpolator for deriving from said third signal a fourth signal of digital samples in which said frequency content of said information represented by said first signal has been changed.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein said first and second signals have a first sampling rate and said third and fourth signals have a second sampling rate twice that of said first sampling rate.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein said signal points of said second signal are temporally disposed between said samples of said first signal.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein said signal points of said second signal are temporally disposed midway between said samples of said first signal.

5. The system of claim 1, further comprising means for truncating portions of said first signal prior to generating said second signal and delaying said first signal.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein said first signal is a video signal, and said fourth signal represents an enlargement of the picture represented by said truncated video signal.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein said first signal is a video signal, and said fourth signal represents a compression of the picture represented by said video signal.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein said first signal is a video signal, and said fourth signal represents an enlargement of a portion of the picture represented by said video signal.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein said compensated variable interpolator controls a ratio of the number of samples per unit time in said fourth signal to the number of samples per unit time in said third signal.

10. The system of claim 1, further comprising means for controlling said compensated variable interpolator to provide selected ratios of compression and expansion of information in said first signal.

11. The system of claim 9, wherein said ratio is in a range wherein one limit is greater than one and the other limit is less than one.

12. The system of claim 9, wherein said ratio is a ratio of integers.

13. An interpolation system, comprising:

means for truncating portions of a video signal of digital samples;

a finite impulse response filter for generating from said truncated video signal a second signal of digital samples representing signal points between said samples of said truncated video signal;

means for delaying said truncated video signal;

means for interleaving said second signal and said delayed video signal to produce a third signal having a sample density twice that of said video signal; and

,

a compensated variable interpolator for deriving from said third signal a fourth signal of digital samples in which the number of samples per unit time is greater than the number of samples per unit time in said third signal, for displaying a portion of said picture in an enlarged scale.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein said video signal can have frequency components higher than approximately 25% of a sampling rate of said video signal without significant reduction of bandwidth in said enlarged scale picture.

15. The system of claim 13, wherein said video signal can have frequency components as high as approximately 40% of a sampling rate of said video signal without significant reduction of bandwidth in said enlarged scale picture.

16. The system of claim 13, wherein said truncating means comprises a FIFO line memory.

17. The system of claim 13, further comprising means for controlling said compensated variable interpolator to provide selected ratios of enlargement.

18. An interpolation system, comprising:

a finite impulse response filter for generating from a first set of digital samples a second set of digital samples representing points between said samples of said first set, said first signal representing information having a frequency content;

means for delaying samples of said first set;

means for interleaving samples of said second set and samples of said delayed first set to produce a third set of digital samples having a higher sample density than that of said first set of samples; and

,

an interpolator for deriving from said third set of samples a fourth set of samples in which said frequency content of said information represented by said first set has been changed.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein said sample interleaving means selects groups of samples from said third set for processing by said interpolator, each of said groups of said third set including at least one sample from each of said first and second sets.

20. The system of claim 18, comprising a plurality of said finite impulse response filters for generating a plurality of said third sets of samples.
