Abstract

A communication network having a master and a plurality of remotes, these remotes supporting a plurality of co-services, in which access to inbound frequencies among the remotes is shared. When a need by a remote for an extraordinary amount of bandwidth is detected, a reserved spillover frequency from a set of frequencies is reserved for that remote. This bandwidth is reallocated when the need for extraordinary bandwidth for that remote has ended.

Claims

1. A communication network comprising:

a master and a plurality of remotes, said remotes supporting a plurality of co-services and being operative to share access to at least one inbound frequency by way of which information signals are transmitted from said remotes to said master;

means for detecting a need by a remote for an extraordinary amount of bandwidth in excess of bandwidth of said at least one inbound frequency;

means for allocating to said remote a reserved spillover frequency from a set of frequencies in response to said means for detecting said need for extraordinary bandwidth for said remote;

means for detecting when said need for extraordinary bandwidth by said remote has ended; and

means for reallocating said remote, which has been allocated to said reserved spillover frequency, to one of the remaining frequencies when the need for extraordinary bandwidth for said remote has ended.

2. The network of claim 1, wherein at least one of the remotes is capable of supporting a plurality of different co-services.

3. The network of claim 1, wherein the means for detecting an end of a need includes means for detecting at least one of:

a telephone going on-hook, cessation of network congestion, depletion of an awaiting queue, end of a perceived traffic burst, a circuit clear request, manual operation intervention, and timed events.

4. The network of claim 3, wherein the means for detecting a need by a remote includes means for detecting at least one of:

a telephone going off-hook, network congestion, excess queuing or aging of data, perceived burst of traffic, circuit setup request, manual operator intervention, and timed events.

5. The network of claim 2, wherein all of the co-services of said remote having said need for extraordinary bandwidth are moved to the spillover frequency.

6. A method of simultaneously supporting multiple co-services on one frequency set of a network having a master and a plurality of remotes, the method comprising the steps of:

transmitting signals from said remotes inbound to said master over at least one inbound frequency, access to which is shared among the remotes;

detecting a need by a remote for an extraordinary amount of bandwidth in excess of bandwidth of said at least one inbound frequency;

allocating to said remote a reserved spillover frequency from a set of frequencies in response to detecting said need for extraordinary bandwidth for said remote;

detecting when said need for extraordinary bandwidth by said remote has ended; and

reallocating said remote which has been allocated to said reserved spillover frequency to one of the remaining frequencies when the need for extraordinary bandwidth for said remote has ended.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein at least one of the remotes is capable of supporting a plurality of different co-services.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the step of detecting an end of a need includes the step of detecting at least one of:

a telephone going on-hook, cessation of network congestion, depletion of an awaiting queue, end of a perceived traffic burst, a circuit clear request, manual operator intervention, and timed events.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the step of detecting a need by a remote includes the step of detecting at least one of:

a telephone going off-hook, network congestion, excess queuing or aging of data, perceived burst of traffic, circuit setup request, manual operator intervention, and timed events.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein all of the co-services of said remote having said need for extraordinary bandwidth are moved to the spillover frequency.

11. A communication network comprising:

a master and a plurality of remotes, said remotes supporting a plurality of co-services and being operative to share access to at least one slotted frequency by way of which information signals are transmitted from said remotes to said master;

means for detecting a need by a remote for an extraordinary amount of bandwidth in excess of bandwidth of said at least one slotted frequency;

means for allocating to said remote a reserved set of slots of a frequency in response to said means for detecting a need for extraordinary bandwidth for said remote;

means for detecting, by a credit mechanism, when said need for extraordinary bandwidth by said remote has ended; and

means for reallocating the slots which said remote has been allocated so as to make said allocated slots available for use by all remotes in the network when the need for extraordinary bandwidth for said remote has ended.

The network of claim 11, wherein the means for determining includes means for initially crediting a remote, that has been allocated said reserved set of slots, with an initial credit value, and increasing said credit value when said remote utilizes said reserved slots and decreasing said credit value when said remote does not utilize said reserved slots.

13. The network of claim 12, wherein the means for determining includes means for detecting when said credit value falls below a predetermined value, said credit value falling below said predetermined value indicating an end of the need for the reserved slots for the remote.

14. The network of claim 12, wherein the means for determining includes means for detecting when said credit value reaches a predetermined limit value, said credit value reaching said predetermined limit value indicating an end of the use of the served slots for use by the remote.

15. A method of allocating a subset of slots of a frequency on a reserved basis to at least one remote of a network having a master and a plurality of remotes, the method comprising the steps of:

transmitting information signals from said at least one remote inbound to said master over at least one slotted frequency access to which is shared among the remotes;

detecting a need by a remote for an extraordinary amount of bandwidth in excess of bandwidth of said at least one slotted frequency;

allocating to said remote a reserved set of slots of a frequency in response to detection of a need for extraordinary bandwidth for said remote;

determining the end of the need by said remote for extraordinary bandwidth by a credit mechanism;

reallocating the slots which said remote has been allocated so as to make said allocated slots available for use by all remotes in the network when the need for extraordinary bandwidth for said remote has ended.

The method of claim 15, wherein the step of determining includes the step of initially crediting a remote that has been allocated said reserved set of slots with an initial credit value, and increasing said credit value when said remote utilizes said reserved slots and decreasing said credit value when said remote does not utilize said reserved slots.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the step of determining includes the step of detecting when said credit value falls below a predetermined value, said credit value falling below said predetermined value indicating an end of the need for the reserved slots for the remote.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the step of determining includes the step of detecting when said credit value reaches a predetermined limit value, said credit value reaching said predetermined limit value indicating an end of the use of the reserved slots by the remote.

19. The method of claim 15, further comprising the step of pre-qualifying a remote for allocation of reserved slots.
