A method for treatment of sepsis in a patient in need thereof which comprises orally or parenterally administering to said patient a composition comprising at least one keto analog of a branched-chain essential amino acid selected from the group consisting of valine, leucine, and isoleucine in an amount effective to treat sepsis.
