1. A heat pump and air conditioning system operable in at least one of a heating and a cooling mode, both modes including thermal charging and discharging cycles, the system comprisinga refrigerant circuit including a compressor, a fourway reversing valve, and, in serial connection, a first heat exchanger, a first expansion device, a second expansion device, and a second heat exchanger,a thermal storage device positioned in the refrigerant circuit between the first and second expansion devices,a first bypass conduit for bypassing the first expansion device, the first bypass conduit including a first controlled valve,a second bypass conduit for bypassing the second expansion device, the second bypass conduit including a second controlled valve, andmeans for controlling operation of the first and second controlled valves so that during the thermal charging cycle in operation in either the heating or cooling mode, refrigerant flowing in the refrigerant circuit bypasses the first expansion device and during the thermal discharging cycle in either the heating or cooling mode, refrigerant bypasses the second expansion device.
