Abstract

A system for mapping and/or displaying spatio-temporal features of underlying event-related neural activity involves measuring the event-related evoked potential values at a limited number of points over the region of interest, deriving a first grid of potential values at points over the area of interest representing at least a tenfold increase in the number of points by a Kriging-type of spatial statistical interpolation, and using the first grid to derive for the region of interest a second grid of points current density values by a Laplacian conversion. A plurality of second grids of current density values spaced apart in time are derived and displayed on a monitor in cartoon-type fashion to provide a cartoon-type display of the features of the event-related evoked response over the region of interest varying with time. Various other displays are possible for highlighting specific features.

Claims

1. A process for estimating the potentials at a number of points within an area of interest as a measure of underlying neural activity comprising the steps of:

measuring physiological potentials at a limited number of points within the area of interest by means of electrodes to yield electrical signals indicative thereof;

the step of amplifying the electrical signals, yielding amplified signals; and

the step of estimating the potential at each of an increased number of points over the area of interest by Kriging interpolation of the amplified signals.

2. The process of claim 1 in which the Kriging interpolation is ordinary Kriging.

3. The process of claim 1 in which the Kriging interpolation is ordinary Kriging with a power function variogram model.

4. The process of claim 3 in which the variogram is used with a power function raised to between 1.4 and 1.8.

5. The process of claim 1 in which the Kriging interpolation is universal Kriging utilizing information available as to the underlying neural activity in the area of interest.

6. A process according to claim 1, claim 2, claim 3, claim 4 or claim 5 in which said Kriging interpolation generates at least about a five fold increase in the number of points.

7. The process of claim 1 in which the estimating step is performed by a microprocessor.

8. An apparatus for displaying features of underlying neural activity at a desired point in an area of interest in a human or animal comprising:

a plurality of electrodes for positioning at points in the area of interest and means for deriving therefrom electrical signals as measures of the physiological potentials at such points;

an electronic means to derive by a Kriging interpolation program a grid of estimated potential values of an area corresponding to the area of interest with a greater coordinate density than the number of original points;

means for sampling the values of a selected point in the grid of estimated potential values corresponding to the desired point; and

means for displaying the value of the estimated potential at the desired point in a plot against time in successive sampling intervals.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 in which the plurality comprises fifteen electrodes.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 in which the Kriging interpolation is ordinary Kriging.

11. The apparatus of claim 8 in which the Kriging interpolation is ordinary Kriging with a power function variogram model.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 in which the variogram is used with a power function raised to between 1.4 and 1.8.

13. The apparatus of claim 8 in which the Kriging interpolation is universal Kriging.

14. The apparatus of claim 8 in which the Kriging interpolation is universal Kriging utilizing information available as to the underlying neural activity in the area of interest.

15. An apparatus according to claim 8, claim 9, claim 10, claim 11, claim 12, claim 13, or claim 14 in which said Kriging interpolation generates at least about a five fold increase in the number of points.

16. The apparatus of claim 8 in which the electronic means comprises a microprocessor.

17. An apparatus for displaying features of underlying neural activity at a desired point in an area of interest in a human or animal comprising:

a plurality of electrodes for positioning at points in the area of interest and means for deriving therefrom electrical signals as measures of the physiological potentials at such points;

an electronic means to derive by a Kriging interpolation program a grid of estimated potential values of an area corresponding to the area of interest with a greater coordinate density than the number of original points;

means for displaying the estimated potentials.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 in which the plurality comprises fifteen electrodes.

19. The apparatus of claim 17 in which the Kriging interpolation is ordinary Kriging.

20. The apparatus of claim 17 in which the Kriging interpolation is ordinary Kriging with a power function variogram model.

21. The apparatus of claim 20 in which the variogram is used with a power function raised to between 1.4 and 1.8.

22. The apparatus of claim 17 in which the Kriging interpolation is universal Kriging.

23. The apparatus of claim 17 in which the Kriging interpolation is universal Kriging utilizing information available as to the underlying neural activity in the area of interest.

24. An apparatus according to claim 17, claim 18, claim 19, claim 20, claim 21, claim 22, or claim 23 in which said Kriging interpolation generates at least about a five fold increase in the number of points.

25. The apparatus of claim 17 in which the electronic means comprises a microprocessor.
